Tavira and Cabanas Golfing The Algarve is now recognized as one of the leading regions for golf in the world with over twenty four well established courses already in commission and more being landscaped every year. Cabanas has four courses within easy reach alone. Benamor: Sir Henry Cotton designed this course, setting it at the top of the old fishing village of Cabanas, just four minutes from Tavira. Nestled between the Tavira coastline and the sprawling uplands of Serra do Caldeirao, these greens offer views of the Atlantic to the South and up towards the Hinterlands in the North. The fertile valley is an ideal setting as the sun sets against the striking hills. A great place to play a game of golf. Quinta da Ria & Cima: These two courses are incredible & I have no hesitation in saying that. The first to open was Quinta da Ria, taking its name from the famous estate which gave it patronage. William 'Rocky' Roquemore commissioned the seconed course, making it far more challenging to its players. Fashioning the estate through a series of streams and lakes, he aimed to make it a difficult run, without losing the sense of view and thematic. (Course requirements are a current handicap certificate and knowledge of general golfing equipment.) Castro Marim: Further inland, between Monte Gordo and Vila Real de Santo Antonio, is the course of Castro Marim. Commanding views of the ocean and the broad estuary of the Guadiana river (the waters separating Spain and Portugal), these are the most easterly greens in the Algarve. Taking its name from the nearby medieval castle, this course is framed by the rolling hills of northern Alentejo. (Course requirements are knowledge of golf etiquette.)
