WELCOME My name is Derek Hawthorne. I live in Northern Ireland, in a place called Newtownabbey which is approximately 7 miles North of Belfast. I am involved in an ongoing process of trying to trace my family history. My father, g.father and gg.father came from a beautiful place on the North East coast of County Antrim called Islandmagee.
Although not quite an island, Islandmagee which is 8 miles long, is joined to the mainland by an attractive raised causeway. Islandmagee enjoyed a reputation for providing more master mariners for its size than any other locality in Ireland. Indeed, many members of the HAWTHORN(E) FAMILY, including my own father, spent many years of their lives on the high seas.
