:

There are two main categories of mission in military air operations. In the first category, aircraft may take-off from an airbase (or ship) and terminate their sorties at another base, possibly having staged through intermediate airfields en route. They then return to the departure base (or ship) either by stages or direct. Such sorties include strategic & tactical airlift and casualty or medical evacuation.

Aircraft that attack or reconnoitre targets, or airdrop supplies or paratroops, after reaching their destination(s) or target(s), usually return direct to base. Sometimes, they may have to make an intermediate landing on the outward or homeward leg. AIRPLAN categorises the sortie types described above as 'Destination' and 'Target' sorties, respectively.

The second main sortie category is the Radius-of Action sortie in which aircraft take-off from an airbase (or a ship), carry out a Patrol and then return to the departure base (or ship). This category of sortie is named a 'Patrol' by AIRPLAN. 'Patrols' include Combat Air Patrols, Long Range Maritime Air patrols, Air to Air Refueling Tanker Towlines or orbits, and similar sorties.
