Coinshooter Charity Rally 30th Sept 2007

With foot and mouth and blue tongue disease I wondered if the rally would ever  take place, but finally September the 30th arrived,

Paul and I had been setting up on the Saturday putting out signs and cordoning off out of bounds and dangerous areas as the day cleared to give some sun, those camping overnight, started to arrive, and we had a fine but very cold night, one or two tried there machines in the camping area, and immediately a group of William 111 sixpences came to light, causing a minor gold rush, and boding well for the rally.

Sunday dawned, as I arrived on site about 7am, with a beautiful sunrise, making the cobwebs on the fences glow, a few early risers  staggered to the loos, and the sun came over the hills on one of the most picturesque sites I have ever had,

With ridge and furrow and the hills lit up in the background, it made me think getting up so early was worth it, Paul had already arrived, and special thanks here, as without this kind of help it wouldn’t happen, he runs his legs off, parking cars, and walking round the site,

And also to all those friends and family who turn up not knowing one end of a detector from the other, to run the raffle, register and assist with parking, all for a cup of tea, and one of Margaret’s sponge cakes!!!

The food wagon arrived and soon the bacon sarnies and tea were on the go,

The site had all the right prospects Medieval Monastery, Scheduled DMV, ploughed out ridge and furrow and Iron Age burial on the hill, all of which except the DMV was in our 200-acre site,

Meadows are not one of my favourites, even if they are like a lawn, but at least this had been ploughed, so I considered we did have a chance,

Gradually the detectorists started to arrive, Many cursing me for no signs, It seems that many were using GPS, and some models were bringing people in the wrong way down a gated road, on the opposite side of the dig, to were all the signs were, So a lesson learned, check with several GPS makes, or use a map,

But all eventually made it, and after registering and handing out maps, of the area they were off,

With such a vast site searchers quickly became like ants dotted on the hilltops and as I suspected finds were few and far between, even though this had been ploughed finds had gone deep, But because of the undisturbed nature of the soil the finds that began to appear were in excellent condition, So soon  Ros Tyrell , the Buckinghamshire FLO, was busy photographing and recording,

Two lovely Groats came up unclipped and perfect, also many small bronze Roman and a lot of hammered next to the DMV, made me wonder what would be there if it were deep ploughed.

A bronze age axe came of the hill, but really there was so much land that detectorist were lost, and would never be able to cover it all,

Interestingly two or three of the best finds went to almost complete beginners, that says something I think, A lovely silver Silique of Honorius, came up 20 yards from the registration tent, to my Brother who hasn’t been out this year after a knee replacement, and two mint groats went to two completely new detectorists.

It was noticeable that those who were in groups, rushed around, finding nothing so maybe we can all learn to go back to basics,

On site we had the RNLI who arranged the land for us, and were receiving half the money raised, and also Margaret Pierce the landowner from my last rally, now selling her renowned cake scones and fruit in aid of RNLI.

As many will know, I got into the rally scene after loosing my wife Jean to Ovarian cancer, a particularly horrific and deadly form of cancer, so decided to raise money and awareness by detecting rallies, and over £10,000 was raised last year,

This rally Raised £3000, so it’s a great way of raising money and getting some normally unavailable land to detect on,,

Hopefully next years rally will be a 2/3 day event and will be in North Buckinghamshire, dates and venue under discusion, now.

So In future look out for more Coinshooter charity rallies, as I think this is going to open up some great areas to us, and at the same time promote the hobby and help others, what could be better,

I will try to always get site with good potential and undetected, but as we all know its luck in the end,

So keep an eye on the magazine for next years

COINSHOOTER CHARITY RALLIES, I have already got land offered so we just need to set up dates, and I will try and get us some good areas, I am not into ripping people off with the same land year after year, its my hobby too you know!

So thanks to all who attended , hope you had a good day ( when you found it ) we did our best for you,

finds pictures will be published when I get them from FLO.

Who am I? I originally started detecting in 1980, I was a bottle dump digger, but lack of dump sites, and a cave in, made me take an interest in Detecting, I was already working as an electronics engineer, so decided to make my own, I have since used every type of machine, and when early redundancy/retirement loomed up, It made sense to sell them as well, I have made many good finds over the years, a lot of which are in our local museum, I will always try to give you a fair deal, As its my hobby too, and I want you too enjoy it as much as I have over the past 30 years.
