Eleven plus So, you and your child have decided to opt for a grammar school education. What happens next? Each of the four local grammar schools has its own selection process, but whichever one you choose will require some preparation, as the tests that they set are very different from the SATs tests with which you will be familiar. What can you do? There are a number of very helpful 11+ websites and I highly recommend the book '11 + English' by Katherin Hamlyn for those who will be tested on their reading and writing skills. Buying the NFER practice tests from WHSmith will also help you to prepare, especially for the reasoning tests . Of course, there are some exceptionally bright children who will pass these tests with very little preparation, but keep in mind that of the hundreds that apply each year, only a small percentage are accepted. Having been through the process with my sons, who attend P.G.S, I know how stressful this time can be. What can I do? If, after trying some of the above mentioned methods, you and your child feel that you need some additional help, please contact me to discuss your needs. During October half term I will be offering children a chance to take a mock 11+. Places are limited, but a small deposit will reserve a place. This is an ideal way to assess whether or not your child needs additional tuition. Improve
Your English
Keys stages 2/3Struggling with English at school has a 'knock on' effect, which can ultimately lead to difficulties in all areas of your child's education. A little extra support can help your child gain confidence and really achieve their potential. I can help your key skill 2 child improve their reading, writing and spelling; while at key stage 3 I can help with essay writing, comprehension and grammar, making the transition to GCSE smoother. |
