A very common wild flower, found in most hedgerows and woodlands, as well as roadside banks and rough or scrubby areas.

The large and variable leaves of this plant, some with dark blotches, appear before the flowers, from early spring, with the fruits ripening throughout the summer to form the distinctive column of red berries seen later in the year.
