The complete list of plants in flower, insects and birds noted in my garden in Gosport, Hampshire, UK on 1st Jan 2008 is as follows:

- Plants - in flower
- Anagallis arvensis* (Scarlet Pimpernel), many plants but only one flower seen;
- Antirrhinum majus* (Snapdragon);
- Bellis perennis (Daisies), several seen;
- Calendula officinalis* (Marigold);
- Capsella bursa-pastoris (Shepherd's-purse);
- Centhranthus ruber* (Red Valerian) pink, & white flowered plants;
- Cytisus scoparius* cultivar (Broom);
- Euphorbia peplus (Petty Spurge), several seen with flowers;
- Erysimum cheiri* (Wallflower);
- Mercurialis annua* (Annual Mercury);
- Poa annua (Annual Meadow-grass) several in flower;
- Primula vulgaris (Primrose) one flower seen;
- Rosmarinus offiinalis* (Rosemary), a large bush with just 3 newly-opened flowers;
- Rosa 'Peace' (Cultivated Rose), yellow flowers;
- Rosa sp. (Cultivated Rose), red flowers;
- Sonchus oleraceus* (Smooth Sow-thistle);
- Veronica persica (Common Field-speedwell), many in flower & fruit;

Fauna
- Angle Shades* (Phlogophora meticulosa), one larva on Lavatera arborea, and has been since 04-Nov-2007;
- beetle larvae* (I think!) 2 of, under a brick on the compost heap;
- Black-headed Gulls* (Larus ridibundus), flying over the garden at intervals all day;
- Blackbird* (Turdus mereula) one female;
- Blue Tits* (Parus caeruleus) 2 seen;
- Buff-tailed Bumble Bee (Bombus terrestris) one;
- centipede, a* Lithobius sp?, about 5cm long, and robust with 15 pairs of legs;
- Collared Doves* Streptopelia decaocto a pair, seen mating;
- Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), one flying past the house;
- cranefly, a* (Tipula sp?);
- Harlequin Ladybird* ** (Harmonia axyridis), one pupa on Lavatera arborea;
- homopteran bug* (Eupteryx melissae);
- House Sparrows* (Passer domesticus);
- Starlings* (Sternus vulgaris) small flock of 3 to 20 or so at various times;
- Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus);
Other
- Fungi* (a mushroom), pale lemon, about 2cm high with a cap c.6mm diameter;
**It may be of interest that the highest count of Harlequin Ladybirds in my garden was on 15th Nov 2007 when I counted 22 live Harlequins, plus 2 dead - mostly on one Lavatera arborea plant, with just one pupa on an adjacent small bushy Laurus nobilis. 14 were live larvae, 6 were live pupae, 2 dead ones were pupae which were cannibalized by 2 of the larvae.
