Bread
were one of the most popular bands of the early 1970's, Scoring hits such
as "Baby I'm-A Want You", "If", "Everything I
Own" and The Billboard Number One "Make It With You".
Bread were consistent from 1969 to 1973, Led by David Gates they recorded
Five Unique Albums and "The Best of Bread" volumes 1 & 2,
bread broke up in 1973 because David had refused to support James having
a single release after him having had 10 in a row. Elektra was about to
resign them for another term and James told their manager that if he didn’t
get a single release commitment, Bread would not resign. James didn’t
hear anything back from David or their manager as David decided to go
solo. Meanwhile Mike Botts (Drums) and Larry Knechtel Returned to session
Work.
Bread Regrouped in 1976 For the top 10 album and title track "Lost
Without Your Love" and "The Sound of Bread" (UK) in 1977,
they toured once again but this wouldn't last, the
next James saw was an article in Billboard describing an upcoming Tour
in the UK by David Gates and Bread as well as another in Australia. David
& James had formed a corporation, which gave them both ownership of
the name. David disregarded this when he set the tour. James phoned him
to let him know that he was available and willing to participate in the
tour but he refused his offer.
James then was forced to sue to stop David using the Bread logo without
him. He prevailed in court and it was ordered that David not use the name
without James' consent.
In 1996 they put aside their differences and the legal battles and did
their Last ever (and 25th Anniversary) Tour. David Gates still tours, Mike
Botts has a solo CD out and James Griffin is working on other projects
around the Country music scene (See Below).
