History

The club was founded by W.R. Foggon in 1956 as the British Celanese Chess club. Until 1980 the club met at the B.C. sports and social club, which is now the Asterdale Banqueting & Sports Club.

The name was changed in 1980 to the Courtalds (Spondon) chess club after the owners sold the rights to the British Celanese name. In 1998 the site became known as Acordis and the club name was changed to the present Spondon chess club.
