Chesil Beach

Chesil beach is a vast shingle bank that stretches for miles west of Portland. There are several marks along the beach that I have fished.

Abbotsbury. There is a car park right on the beach front, that is charged for a certain time of the year. The mark I head for is the dragon's teeth, a set of wartime concrete structures a few hundred yards east of the carpark. Fishing is generally quite easy here, but it pays to select the best tides and time, (where doesn't it). Distance casting is not really necessary. I have caught Whiting, Pouting, Plaice and Mackerel. In the summer hords of mackerel featherers can be found here, but I usually fish after dark, when the weather is clear you can see the fishing lights for miles and miles along the coast.

West Bexington. Again there is a carpark right on the beach. Very similar to Abbotsbury. I've only fished it once and blanked. But I wasn't too suprised as it was in the middle of the day over mid water. I was really practising casting with a new beachcaster. I have been back again and caught Rockling ,Pouting Whiting and a small Bass. It is best to walk away from the carpark, (don't forget to pay for your parking), there is a path behind the bank and walking is much easier than along the beach, just cross the bank when you get to your chosen spot.

West Bay. Here you have a coice of fishing the Beach or the small harbour arms. This is now featured on TV in the BBC series Harbour Lights. I've not fished here but people were fishing both the times I have been to West Bay. The harbour arms do get very crowded in summer though.

Tackle shops. I can recommend The  Tackle Shop, West Bay 01384 23475, or Weymouth Angling Centre 01305 777771, both have good selections of tackle and bait.
