Why Rush? Why not, I say...

A poll was recently conducted at The Register, to find out what groups people in the industry liked to listen to. The prog rock group Rush came top, with almost twice as many votes as the next highest artists, Metallica, and the chap who's written the article doesn't seem too happy about it...

Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee & Neil Peart - Rush

I can see clearly now (part two)

Following on from my post of April 2nd, I had my contact lens check up today - fortunately I've had no adverse reactions to the lenses at all, so I can carry on wearing them for good now.

One advantage that I hadn't considered at the time was that as my eyesight changes over time, so my lenses can be updated too - my left eye has changed slightly since I got my eyes tested last year, so now I have better vision with lenses than I do with my glasses. My first batch is ready for collection on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week, then after that I get them posted to me monthly... sorted!

Sign of the times...

I live next to a heathland, and there are signs restricting vehicles and so on all around it. I walked past one tonight, and I wondered - do sign writers get paid by the the word?

I can see clearly now...

Not that I couldn't before, of course - I wear glasses, and have done for the last 25 years. However, Specsavers are currently offering a free contact lens trial, so I thought I'd give it a go. I've always been a bit apprehensive about sticking my fingers in my eyes, but they assured me that it was easy to do, so with a little trepidation I made the appointment...

I turned up this morning, and after squirting orange dye in my eyes and having a look at my pupils, etc, I was told my eyes were perfect (hardly - I wouldn't be in the opticians if that were the case!) - still, if a young lady tells me my eyes are perfect, I'm not going to disagree with her... ;)

We had a brief discussion about when, where and why I wanted to wear them, and then she dug out a pair of contacts and popped them in for me. After the requisite blinking and watering of the eyes, I wandered around for 5 minutes to get used to them. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy they were to adjust to - initially it feels a little wierd, like you have an eyelash in your eye, but that soon passes and you suddenly realise the for the first time in years you're able to read and see things clearly without having glasses on.

I went back and then had to practice putting them in and taking them out myself. Putting them in is easy - you pick it up on your fingertip, open your eye nice and wide with the other hand and the lens pretty much jumps onto the eye. Taking them out is a little more involved - you have to pinch from the sides of your eye to the centre - if you don't use enough pressure you just skim the top of the lens and it stays in your eye. Obviously it's best to start off being too light than ploughing on in there... ;)

I soon got the hang of that, so they gave me two weeks worth of lenses to try out, then I popped some new lenses in and wore them home. I have to build up the amount of time I wear them gradually, so I've just taken them out for today (just under two hours wear). Tomorrow I can wear them for 4 hours, and so on, up to a recommended maximum time of ten hours. I go back in a couple of weeks to make sure that everything is okay and decide whether I want to carry on wearing them, but so far everything seems groovy!
