Stevenage and District Motorcycle Club

A message from our Club Chairman and Information about the Club
On behalf of the Stevenage and District Motor Cycle club, may I take this opportunity to welcome you to our web site; my name is Tony Brown, Chairman of the club for the past 25 years.
I would like to take a few minutes of your time to tell you about our club.
October 1960, the Red Lion Public House, Shephall, Stevenage and four men sat at the bar, and decided to form a motor cycle club; they placed an advert in the local paper for members and with approx twenty replies, in February 1961 the Stevenage and District Motor Cycle Club was formed. Several of those members who attended that first meeting, Arnold Hoiles, Brian Young, Ted Merrick, Pat Barrett and Jeff & Cherry Humphries, are still club members today, although a bit older and a lot wiser, they still enjoy the chatter at club meetings about the good old days.
In the late 6o’s early 70’s, the club was one of the foremost organisers of British sprint events, world record attempts and international drag festivals in the country, with car and bike drag racers coming over from the states to compete against the best in Britain. We put our best car drag racers of that time up against the likes of Don "Big Daddy" Garlits, Connie Kalita in the "Bounty Hunter" and Tony Nancy with the worlds first rear engine dragster, the Wedge, while on the bike side they sent Clem Johnson with his famous Vincent "The Barn Job" and the Michigan madman D.J.Potter and his V8 car engined bike.
Our best biker at that time was our late president George Brown, who on his Vincent powered Nero and Super Nero gained no less than 24 world records for club and country, I have to give him a bit of a build up as he was my father and on Super Nero I achieved 6 world records. I know you all know that old song, "why does everyone call him bighead" but someone’s got to boost my ego.
Other members of the club also achieved world records, our late president Maurice Brieley, who only had one leg, powered his Vincent sidecar outfit "Methamon" to several world records, as to did Mason Merrick on another Vincent outfit, Tony Driscoll on a supercharged Triumph outfit, and Adrian Reynard, who later became more famous for his designing and building formula one and Indy car chassis under the name of Reynard Racing.
Our now President Pat Barrett, was unbeatable on yet another Vincent powered outfit at sprint meeting around the country. The list goes on, I could write a whole chapter on the achievements of the Stevenage and District Motor Cycle Clubs history over the past forty years, but I will not dwell too much on the past, let’s look forward to the future.
Today we still have members competing in road races and sprint meetings, one member, when we can get his subs out of him, is five times world champion Phil Read.
The club meets every Monday night at various drinking houses around the area, (see our clubs calendar for more details) so if you fancy a natter about bikes or just need to get out of the other halves way pop along and see us.
I do hope you have enjoyed this little bit of our clubs history. If you want to know more of the clubs history or have any questions, please feel free to E-Mail me.
Wishing you safe and enjoyable motorcycling.

Today now, forty two years on, and the club is still going very strong, and now boasts a membership of around one hundred and forty. It is not very active on the sporting side as it was, several of the younger members take part at track days, while the older ones plod around on there vintage steeds and think of those good old days.
As well as the events shown on the clubs programme members of the club take part in many other events from track days and racing to rallying and touring, members also attend most of the biking events around the country and group ride outs to these are often arranged and well attended.
The club has for the past few years been involved in charity fund raising activities; these have included sponsored rides and social events along with the very popular Easter egg Run.
The club welcomes riders of all types of motorcycle, classic or modern and current members represent almost every manufacturer past and present.
We have negotiated significant discounts with local motorcycle shops and traders as well as insurance companies.
simply complete the membership form and bring it along to a convenient meeting, see club calendar, or e-mail using the contact page.
