Diver feature -  David Bewick

David started diving in 1985 and married his instructor.  Qualifying in 1994 as a First Class Diver and Advanced Instructor he has been involved in the BSAC Instructor Training Scheme for the last decade.  Over the same period he has been an active Ships Diving Officer, diving on the hulls of ships in harbours around the world.  Sport diving all year round in the UK, he has also dived in Malta, Menorca, the Red Sea, Israel, the Gulf, Indonesia, Australia (both sides), the Bahamas, St Lucia, Chuuk and Palau.  A keen photographer and videographer, his first underwater photo was taken in the early 1990s and he rarely enters the water without a camera.  He trained on the AP Inspiration Closed Circuit Rebreather at the beginning of 2005 and took delivery of an Evolution a few months later.  Now a passionate “no bubble” diver this expedition will be the first time he has worn traditional open circuit diving gear for over a year.

Expedition Dive Location Feature:

On arrival at departures we were met with the news that the live-aboard had been double-booked and an alternative was being investigated by our advance party.  The ritual dishing out of the t-shirts followed to the trepidation of all, as the advanced party had reported that extra baggage had been charged on the their flight and £400 had been exchanged for some expedition equipment to be carried.  In the event some smooth talking by Mike saw us through with no problems although the camera kit was well above the allowable weight.

The first leg between LHR and Doha was pleasant as the flight was about half full and several members stretched out for the whole time only being interrupted by meals and drink service. There was a brief hour long stay in the Transit area in Doha Airport – plenty of time for ‘window shopping’ the Duty Free Shops.
