Expedition Dive Location Feature: The first dive site consisted of typical reef shelving down steeply to 35m+. There was good visibility with lots of life both at depth as well as in the shallows. Most pairs saw at least a couple of Hawksbill turtles and the reef was covered with large shallows of blue and yellow Jacks. At depth a number of pairs found a large free swimming yellow spotted moray eel, who was content to pose for photographs and was undisturbed by the presence of divers. Following a period trying to locate the safari boat Captain we sacked our original 90min transit South and settled for a 45 min rush to a sall island for our next event. The second dive was again a 35mtr 40 min profile with slight current off a small island. A healthy reef led to a sandy 30mtr shelf. No large species were observed but the wall was home to many varied corals and fish. A 2 hr dash South across the Indian Ocean put us within reach of the more established dive sites, but we elected to dive on another small island inside Shaviyani Atoll called Milandhoo and plan a night dive in the same area. The dive site was different from the majority of other sites we have dived to date in that a good proportion of the reef wall was a sheer face very unusual for the Maldives. Mike Brydon, Phil Anderson and Riyaz went diving singing the praises of the Pyramid Butterfly fish. You could hear the cries from the “Gallowgate End” of:“Peter Reids got a monkeys heed” across the ocean floor. It wasn’t long before we had a big shoal of Toon Army Black Pyramid Butterfly fish joining in. It should be noted from a training perspective that singing underwater is very heavy on your air consumption just ask Mike who after only 10 minutes underwater was on a 20 bar!! |
