Carlton Moor Gliding Club is now over 70 years old, being founded in 1931, and then known as the Newcastle Gliding Club. At that time, most of the flying was carried out at Sunderland Airport, which is now the location of the Nissan car factory.

The Club moved to its present site on the North Yorkshire Moors in the early 1960's, and was then renamed the Newcastle and Teesside Gliding Club.

More recently the Club undertook another name change to better reflect its location, thus becoming the Carlton Moor Gliding Club.

The Club's site is a landmark on the Cleveland Way long distance walk.
