The corner shop at the top of the street was where mother's shopping list was often a topic of much discussion between neighbours. Alan Gallagher, who lived just a few doors away, was often sent to the shop with his mother's shopping list, and on occasions, Eddie Shields would lie in wait for him. After grabbing Alan by the scruff of the neck, Eddie would snatch the list from Alan's hand and add an extra item.....'and five Woodbines'.  Alan's protests were waved away with the threat of a black eye if he didn't do as he was told, and Alan, being a timid type of lad, always reluctantly obliged. Eddie would then peep round the side of the shop window  - much like the chap in the photograph - to see if the five Woodbines were put in Alan's shopping basket, and once satisfied he was going to get his cigs, Eddie would rub his hands with glee and eagerly await Alan's exit from the shop.
