Season
1947-48. Cheshire League
Record
Average Gate
At
a meeting prior to the commencement of the 1947-48 season, Mr. W Simcock (former president of Droylsden United), was elected
chairman of Droylsden. Other elected members of the committee included: Rev. A Proctor: president. Mr. C Saltsman: vice chairman.
Mr. G Smith: secretary, and Mr. Foster, financial secretary. Richard Neilson meanwhile, had been upgraded to the post of player
manager.
The
club had retained practically all last seasons' players with the exception of Cyril Booth, the outside left who had joined
Stalybridge Celtic. Players signed included: *McIntosh, Broome, Turner, *Neilson, *Pomphrey, Halliday, Noble, *Neary, *Meakin,
Capel, *Gibson, *Brooks, *Pearson, Burnall, Wiseman, Morris, *Bartholomew, and Hannon. (*Denotes professional). Later in the
season, a winger by the name of N Dixon was signed to replace Booth.
The
season opened under heat wave conditions, and with an increase in gate money from 9d. to 1s. Despite the increase in prices
however, attendances at the Butchers' Arms soared to such an extent that by the end of the 1947-48 season Droylsden had achieved a
record average gate of just over 2,000. Unfortunately, the Droylsden team did not live up to this large increase in attendances,
and finished a disappointing season sixth from bottom of the league table. Off the field it was a rewarding season in more ways
than one, for apart from the increased gates, this was also a season in which the Market Street club received their largest ever
fee from a Football League club when Dixon was transferred to Huddersfield Town for a down payment of £750, with the promise of a
further payment of £250 when Dixon had made six appearances in Huddersfield's first team. On the field the campaign got off to a
bad start when, in September, Droylsden's goalkeeper, Alan McIntosh was badly injured in a league match at the Butchers' Arms.
McIntosh was still receiving hospital treatment for the injury in May 1948, and a benefit match was duly arranged at the end of
the season on the goalkeeper's behalf.
The
1947-48 season saw Droylsden's return to the FA Cup competition, where they beat Wilmslow Albion in an extra preliminary round at
Market Street by 2 goals to 0. In the first preliminary round, again at home, Droylsden played out an astonishing 6-6 draw with
Youlgrave of the Matlock & District League. Droylsden winning the replay 2-1. The Butchers' Arms club then travelled to
Ellesmere Port for the first qualifying round, where they drew the match 2-2 after extra time. The replay at Market Street drew a
big crowd, and Droylsden went through to the next round after beating Ellesmere Port 4-1. In the second qualifying round however,
Droylsden went out of the competition after losing at Altrincham 1-4. In the local derby matches, Droylsden lost to Mossley twice:
at home 2-4 and at Seel Park 1-3. On Xmas Day, Ashton United were beaten at the Butchers' Arms 3-2 (att. 3,500), whilst Ashton got
their revenge at Hurst Cross by beating Droylsden 3-1. Again at home, Droylsden had a comfortable win against Stalybridge Celtic
by 6 goals to 2 (att 3,165), though lost the return match at Bower Fold 0-1.
Hyde United came to the Butchers' Arms and were beaten 2-1 (att. 3,375), whilst at Ewen Fields Hyde took both points with a 1-0
victory.
Of
the local clubs this was to be a bad year for Ashton United, who had finished the season second from bottom in the league table,
and were required to seek re-election, along with bottom club Congleton Town. On Saturday May 22nd, at a meeting of the Cheshire
County League, there was a whistle of surprise when the results of the voting were read out. Congleton had received 23 votes,
Ellesmere Port 14 and Ashton United 13. The Ashton representatives were stunned, and their shock was equally shared by the
representatives of Droylsden, Hyde United, Mossley and Stalybridge Celtic. Ashton United had been voted out of an organisation to
which they had belonged since 1923, whilst Ellesmere Port, who had yet to build stands on their ground, had got in by just one
vote. The Ashton officials left the meeting in shock, though later said they would now have to try for election to the Lancashire
Combination.
