Season
1929-30
Local
Press August 1929.
"Droylsden FC, who have won every trophy possible with the exception of the Manchester League
Championship and the Hyde Cup are pursuing a vigorous policy and hope to emerge from the 1929-30 season with the
Manchester League Championship in the bag. Amongst the many new signings, they have managed to obtain the services of
Cunningham, the old Manchester City centre-half."
Unfortunately,
it was to be another up and down season for Droylsden with some scarcely believable score-lines. In a home match
against Taylor Bros., Droylsden went in at half time leading their visitors 6-4, and at the final whistle the result
was Droylsden 10 Taylor Bros. 7. Two weeks later, Droylsden came away from Hyde United having been thrashed 1-8. Again
at home, Droylsden hammered Hollingworth 7-3, and in the return fixture at Hollingworth, the Butchers' Arms lads duly
got hammered 0-5. In the return match with Hyde United, Droylsden had improved a little, losing by 1-6. During the
game, Millard, the Droylsden centre-half, 'broke his right boot', and as he took an outsize fitting nobody had a spare
boot big enough to fix him up. The boot was strapped together but it flew off every time he kicked the ball.
The
Butchers' Arms club again finished the season in the wrong half of the table, and their best effort came in the
Gilcryst Cup, reaching the semi-final where they were beaten by Glossop 2-3.
At
the annual general meeting in May 1930, the end of season balance sheet showed a profit of £3 on the year. As a new
stand had been built, thanks mainly to the generosity of the Openshaw Brewery Company, the season's workings were
considered satisfactory. The president, Mr. A Rothwell, said there was plenty of room for improvement, so far as
public support was concerned. It should be quite possible to get 1,000 spectators, but the average gate had been
something nearer 400 for the past season. At the meeting the following officials were elected: President, Mr. A
Rothwell. Chairman, Mr. F Moore. Hon. Secretary, Mr. J Rothwell. Hon. Treasurer, Mr. J Welch. Committee, Messrs E Vagg,
J Bent, A Fryer, R Ellis, W Penn, R Moore, S Hampson, W Porter, J McLeavy and W Wood.
