Droylsden FC 1929
Season
1928-29
Droylsden commenced
the 1928-29 season by signing a batch of new players to add to the successful cup-winning team of the previous
season. New players were signed from Marple, Hyde, Ashton National, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Clayton Rovers, Debdale,
Ashton Bros., Eccles United and local club Moorside. For
the first time in the clubs history, all the players had been insured, and money had also been spent on ground
improvements, including the erection of a shelter to cover about 400 spectators on the Greenside Lane end of the
ground.
Droylsden made a good
start to this season by winning their first three league matches, though all hopes for a successful campaign
soon disappeared when Droylsden's new-look team started dropping points at both home and away matches. It would
prove to be yet another poor season for Droylsden in the Manchester League, as they ended their 1928-29 campaign
again in the bottom half of the table.
Droylsden's die-hard band of
supporters were given some hope of success in their clubs attempt to hang on to the Ashton
Challenge Cup when, in April, Droylsden met Stalybridge Celtic in the semi final, and against all odds, held the
Cheshire League outfit to a 3-3 draw at the Butchers' Arms. In the return match however, that same band of
die-hard Droylsden supporters left the ground with their tail between their legs having watched their team
disintegrate before their very eyes, Droylsden losing by 6 goals to 1.
The club held their
annual meeting in June at the Butchers' Arms Hotel, at which there was a good attendance. The accounts were
presented and showed that though the club had £5 4s. cash in hand, unpaid accounts amounted to £25. Club
president Mr. Rothwell, observed that he was not very satisfied with the accounts. He had wanted to finish the season
absolutely straight financially, with possibly some cash in hand. That they hadn't done so was disappointing.
Mr. Rothwell then criticised some of the officials' attendant at the meeting. "Some of you have not been as
regular at attending meetings, or matches, as you might have been. And I appeal to the members not to put their
names forward for election unless they are prepared to do their fair share of the work. Being an official is not
merely an honour - it demands faithful work."
The following
officials' were elected: President: Mr. A Rothwell. Secretary: Mr. W Wood. Treasurer: Mr. J Rothwell. Trainer:
Mr. S Thompson. Auditors: Messrs G Pownall and A Walker. Committee: Messrs Ellis, Moore, Vagg, Porter, Hampson,
Nuttall, Penn and Brotherton.
