Season 1906-07.  Manchester Federation

A Well Balanced Team

September 29th 1906.

"Droylsden do not seem able to get going at all in their Manchester Federation engagements. They seem good enough for anything in the league in mid-field play, but cannot find their shooting form. On Saturday Cheadle St. Mary's could scarcely claim to be four goals better on the afternoon's play, yet they won by that margin, the Droylsden team failing altogether to notch a single point. No doubt they will make a greater effort this afternoon when they will receive a visit from the Hooley Hill Albion eleven, who have been as successful this season as their opponents have been unfortunate."

October 6th 1906.

"The Manchester Federation fixture between Droylsden and Hooley Hill Albion resulted in a win for Droylsden by two goals to none. The Droylsden team, who were on their own ground, played a vigorous game, and completely upset the calculations of the Albion, who were never allowed to settle down to their usual combined game, and scarcely did themselves justice."

Droylsden had signed many new players prior to the start of the season, including Whitfield, a highly rated local goalkeeper. The rest of the squad was made up of: Smith, Berrisford, A Ormrod, Kirk, Hamer, Ellis, Thornton, Maher, Lowe, Clutterbuck, Dunscombe, Webster, Lovatt and Hughes. For Ormrod, this was to be the start of a fourteen-year playing career in a Droylsden shirt; a career in which he was selected to play in the Ashton Amateur League representative eleven on many occasions. In this 1906-07 season, Droylsden entered the Manchester Junior Cup competition, where they were drawn against local club Moorside in the first round - Droylsden winning the match 4-0 at the Butchers' Arms. The Market Street lads went out in the next round however, losing at Parkfield Central 3-4.

In the league, Droylsden continued to struggle, and by Christmas had won only three matches out of twelve played - three others having been drawn. The second half of the season saw some improvement in results, but inconsistency was keeping the club in the wrong half of the table. In January, Droylsden recorded two good results at the Butchers' Arms, beating Didsbury Athletic 5-1, and following that up a week later with a 5-1 victory over visitor's Ladybarn. After scoring ten goals in two matches, Droylsden quickly reverted to their earlier form, which resulted in just two points being won from their next four matches. On the run in to the end of the season however, results improved, and from their last ten fixtures, Droylsden won seven and drew two, which saw the club end their campaign in mid table.

February 23rd 1907.  Droylsden v Poynton

"At Droylsden, on a very muddy ground, which prevented good play. The home team were quickly at work, and only a few minutes elapsed before Ormrod scored for them. Poynton, who were plating the one-back game, could not get going, but their defence was strong, and alone prevented Droylsden from scoring. Once Poynton came near scoring, but Whitfield brought off a good save. The interval arrived with the home team leading by one goal to none. Droylsden were again pressing on the resumption, and shots rained in on the visitor's custodian, but he repelled them in grand fashion until close on the call of time, when Byrom beat him after the ball rebounded from a defender. Droylsden's score would undoubtedly have been heavier but for the grand defence of Poynton, whose goalkeeper seemed to be everywhere at once. The Droylsden wingers would do a little better if they would cross the ball, instead of running too close to the goal-line. They have now a well-balanced team, and should give their supporters a good show in the return fixture at Poynton. Final score: Droylsden 2, Poynton 0."

When the 1906-07 season came to a close Droylsden left the Manchester Federation, and once again the club was abandoned. The Butchers' Arms club would lie dormant for another two seasons until, in the summer of 1909, it was, once again, resurrected.
