Season 1895-96. Manchester & District Alliance Rising Junior Club Droylsden started their second season in the Manchester Alliance with the following players: Rowley, Holmes, Rylance, Hallsworth, Harrison, Bridge, Coston, C Haughton, N Haughton, Ainscough, Jackson, Coates and James Ford. At the beginning of the season, a further indication regarding the recent formation of Droylsden FC is forthcoming when it is stated: "...In the Manchester Alliance that rising junior club Droylsden, administered a severe slating to Fairfield Reserve. The dash and resource shown by the victorious team was a revelation to the Fairfield second string, who scarcely expected so severe a drubbing." (Droylsden won the match 5-1). The league table shown below was published on December 7th 1895, and though it is not the final table, it does show the other teams who Droylsden were playing against in the Manchester & District Alliance. September 28th 1895. Droylsden v Berry's "At Droylsden before a good gate. A grand game resulted, every inch of the ground being fiercely contested, but the defence on both sides was sound. The goals had narrow escapes, and it was close on the interval before Rowley, a new recruit, opened the score for the home team. Half time: Droylsden 1 Berry's nil. The second half was a little in Droylsden's favour, they doing most of the pressing. Berry's could not break through the splendid defence of the home backs, Holmes, Rylance, Hallsworth, Harrison and Bridge. Close on time Coston, of the home team, headed through his own goal, making the scores equal, the end arriving with a draw."
October 26th 1895. Droylsden v Gorton Celtic "On the ground of the former. Soon after the kick off the home team began to press, and after 15 minutes play Ainscough scored from a well-played kick by Rylance, one of the home backs. This seemed to liven the Celts up, who must certainly have scored but for the grand defence of the Droylsden lads. C Haughton, by a grand bit of play, put on number 2 for the home lot, who at the interval led by 2 goals to nil. In the second half both teams played a grand game, and were evenly matched. Each scored a goal, and Droylsden ran out winners by 3 goals to 1."
November 9th 1895. Droylsden v West Royton "Played on the ground of the former. Ainscough started against a strong breeze, and the ball travelled from goal to goal. The visitors were the first to score, Jackson missing his kick in the goalmouth. This seemed to liven the home team up, and they quickly drew level, Coates putting the finishing touch to a well placed shot by C Haughton. Half time: Droylsden 1 West Royton 1. In the second half the home team fairly overplayed their opponents, putting on two goals, which were scored by C Haughton and James Ford."
Manchester & District Alliance Results up to date: December 7th.
During
the year 1895, Droylsden's president, Mr. Joseph Cropper, left the Butchers' Arms Hotel and took up residence near to the ground
in High Street. Whether that had any bearing on Droylsden FC is not known. What is known however, is that Droylsden left the
Manchester Alliance at the end of this 1895-96 season and did not reappear in any other league during the 1896-97 season. The next
we hear of Droylsden is when - in 1897 - it is announced in the local press that Droylsden Association Football Club have joined
the Manchester County FA and have been entered into the Salford League Championship for the 1897-98 season. |
