Longshaw Estate and Padley Gorge from Grindleford

Date:     27 April 2002 Distance:  3¾ Miles
Map:      OS Outdoor Leisure 1/24 Source:    Teashop Walks in the Peak District
Parking: Grindleford Station approach Toilets:     Start and on route
Refreshments: This walk has the benefit of a choice of the traditional National Trust Cafe at Longshaw Lodge (half way round) and the Station Cafe (start and finish) - Coffee in mugs (any size) and have to have one chip butties served from a building that time has forgotten.

It was a day for a short walk. Unpredictable storm showers had been the forecast and the drive over had seen bright sunshine and dark torrential rain. Undeterred we set off up a sharp rise (singing "We're going on a Bear hunt, we're going to catch a big one...") from Grindleford Station through a forested and boulder strewn landscape to reach the Longshaw Estate.  Here the walk levels off and the openly wooded estate grounds provided easy walking to a convenient cafe at the lodge. Coffee and a rest and the off again to find Burbage Brook which is followed through the densely wooded Padley Gorge back to the start and yet another cafe. More coffee (yes we did the double, two coffee shops in under 4 miles).

Breaking out from the tree line

Longshaw Estate is attractively managed

Our path encountering a tributary to Burbage Brook

Without the children we would have run this. It had the perfect angle and surface for a booted jog

Heard this coming and managed to get the camera out in time

The sign outside the Station Cafe welcomes all (especially the more active among us) to this cafe and it's springwater.

I liked the coffee shops the best.
