Elvaston Castle Country Park near Derby
| Date: 3rd April 2002 | Distance: 1¾ miles |

| Parking: Elvaston Castle CP | Toilets: Car park and information centre |
| Refreshments: At the castle itself the cafe has a real 'back parlor' feel, but with all the advantages of an ice-cream machine. Tea and coffee in delicate floral cups and cakes just like granny made. The large lawns just outside make for a good al fresco alternative (and they'll bring sandwiches out to you!) | |
This walk makes for a nice gentle afternoon stroll, and is definitely one for those who like a bit of civilization. We were never out of sight of other people, and with three sets of toilets, an ice cream van and cafe this was a busy location for family outings (probably worth avoiding during school holidays). The lake and gardens are picturesque, and the house is a classic example of British architecture.

Elvaston Castle in all it's glory

The 'Golden Gates' (unfortunately not of the San Francisco variety!)

Elvaston Castle is home to a riding school, so you can expect to be passed by the odd horse and rider.

Spring Thorpe Cottage

You get great views of the lake from any point on its banks. Definitely worth a picture - and don't forget to bring some bread, the ducks are ravenous!
