Black Rocks near Cromford

Date:      2nd April 2002 Distance:  2 miles
Map:       OS Outdoor Leisure 24 Source:    Derbyshire walks with Children
Parking:  Black Rocks Car Park Toilets:    Visitor centre
Refreshments: None, but there are picnic tables at the car park.

The walk starts at the Black Rocks car park and is mostly wooded plantation with the added feature which is the Black Rocks themselves. Even in the woods there are interesting outcrops of rock to keep a looking out for in addition to the wood sculpture, TV mast, trig point and various old buildings from the industrial past of the site.  At the start of the walk close your eyes, take a deep breath and see if you can smell the ghosts of steam engines that once passed under the foot of the rocks.

Melanie says

I liked the rocks the best

Worth a close inspection if you like a scramble on grit stone

Look out for the older graffiti

It's not the best view but it is unavoidably in your face when standing

on the top of the rocks

I loved the shape of this tree, probably a result of restricted root growth

The Derwent Valley from the High Peak Trail

A shame the big house to the left couldn't be bothered to lower their flag to half mast

A timber sculpture adds interest to the High Peak Trail section of the walk.
