Praia da Marinha to Praia do Benagil

A cliff top walk over a sandy heath, through scrub and open woodland from one beach access to the next. Some of the cliff top views give dramatic vistas of hidden beaches and caves only accessible by boat.

Foia, Monchique

Inland from the coast, the highest hill in the Algarve accessible by road gives magnificent views across the surrounding country and south to the sea.

Monchique

The mixed woodland south of Monchique includes several interesting cistus species including the large-flowered Cistus ladanifer. The Judas Tree with purple pea flowers is commonly planted in this area.

Cabo da Sao Vicente

At the furthest western end of the Algarve, Cape St Vincent thrusts its rocky plateau out into the Atlantic ocean. Here the cliff top heath west of Sagres forms a magnificent natural botanic garden which makes tourists reach for their cameras as they see the richness of the colours.

Alte and the Eastern Algarve

Near the sea are sandy areas with a wealth of annual flowers in Spring under the open pine woodland. Further inland, roadside woods shelter heathers, genistas and cistuses.
