Alexander Harper

Alex comes from Worsley in Manchester and began playing the trumpet at eight years old. He came through Salford’s music service having lessons with Bill Miller and Mike Johnson. He progressed through the various ensembles and ended up holding the principal trumpet position in Salford’s Youth Orchestra. Alex has performed as a soloist with Salford Youth Orchestra on a number of occasions. While playing trumpet with Salford Youth Orchestra Alex also enjoyed playing with Brass bands. He worked his way through the ranks at Besses Boys band and then moved on to Walkden band.

In the year 2000 Alex began to study with Gareth Small. Alex was appointed principal trumpet of the newly founded Halle Youth Orchestra, a position which he held for two years. Alex went on tour with the orchestra to Germany in the summer of 2003.

In 2002 Alex started a Degree course at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester studying under Rhys Owens and John Dickinson. He is due to finish his course in the summer of this year. While at the RNCM Alex has performed with many of the leading ensembles including, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Brass Ensemble, Brass Band and Big Band. Earlier this year Alex performed a solo work for Flugel horn with the college New Ensemble.

Professional experience has included work with the Black Dyke Band and the Halle Brass.
