7 New Cottages, Back O’ The Fell Road, Lindale, Cumbria

Book to Fell Cottage

The Lake District is of course famous for its glorious landscapes, wonderful walking & climbing and a multitude of activities for visitors of all persuasion and energy level!  More detailed and comprehensive information is available at the Go Lakes web site.

However, more locally, there are plenty of wonderful attractions and activities.

For Steam enthusiasts, the Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam railway has examples of old steam engines and a short trip by steam train takes you to Newby Bridge and then on to Lakeside, at the southern end of Windermere, from where lake cruises continue as far as Ambleside, 12 miles further on at the top of the lake.

Also at Lakeside is the Aquarium of the Lakes including many exotic fish, reptile and insect species and otters.

For Beatrix Potter fans, a visit to the World of Beatrix Potter visitor centre at Ambleside is a ‘must’.

The Lake District’s most famous resident, William Wordsworth, lived in Grasmere and the Wordsworth Museum at Dove Cottage in the village is, of course, very popular.  No visit to ‘the Lakes’ would be complete without a visit to Glen Ridding where Wordsworth was inspired to write about his “host of golden daffodils”.

Another miniature steam railway, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway or “Lal Ratty” travels between Ravenglass and Eskdale, taking about an hour, passing through wonderful Lake District scenery with plenty of opportunities to leave and re-join the train along the route.

South Lakes Wild Animal Park near Ulverston, has some wonderful animals including the delightful Ring Tail and other Lemurs who are running loose along with the emus, kangaroos and wallabies. The more dangerous animals are of course enclosed but feeding time for the lions and tigers, involving food placed at the top of very high poles, is a sight to behold.

There are many stately homes in the area with interesting tours of the houses and gardens. Muncaster Castle has an owl sanctuary whilst Holker Hall has a historic car museum and Levens Hall has world famous topiary gardens.

The Leighton Moss RSPB Wetland Bird Reserve has marsh harriers and bitterns along with sightings of passing ospreys.  There is of course the successful osprey breeding programme at Bassenthwaite in the northern Lakes.

Closer to home, animals sighted near the cottage include red deer, foxes, badgers and a multitude of wild birds.
