'Ullo John, got a new motor?'
Ah, that classic line uttered by Alexi Sayle all too many years ago and in similar vain to other classics such as 'Two pints of lager and a packet of crisps'. For those of you too young to remember, ask your Dad for a rendition. What is it they say, 'they don't write 'em like that any more' ??
Ahem, back to the subject! I am one of those people (who said odd?) that likes to muck around with cars. Old, new; big, little; good, bad; strange and surprisingly normal.
I blame my Dad really, he used to work at Ford in Australia and for a long time worked for Coles, a company building cranes on Wearside. I have fond memories of helping him fix cars for members of the family back in the days when very few people could afford to have their car fixed at a 'proper' garage. We replaced subframes on Mini's, engines in Viva's and doors on Fiesta's, all in the standard single garage attached to my parent's house in Houghton-le-Spring.
After a couple of ordinary cars and a Fiat Strada Abarth, I was bitten by the kit car bug and decided to build myself a sports car at the ripe old age of 18. My parents mysteriously moved house shortly before I collected the kit and the new house had a double length garage with a large workshop area at the end. Co-incidence? Maybe. I bought myself a 1979 Cortina 2.0 Ghia and bummed around in it for a few months prior to the collection of the kit. A Ginetta G31 superkit.
Moving on, I then owned a wide and varied range of cars from my first new car in 1990, a 205 1.9 GTI special edition with full leather trim which was very, very nice and loads of fun to an old and cheap SAAB 900 bought at a time when funds were tight and I needed to buy something quickly. My current 'collection' includes;
a 3.0 24V Alfa GTV in silver with red leather interior. A hoot to drive, great noise and quite a pose
a GTM Rossa kit car with a mid mounted 1275 MG metro engine, leather interior, a custom dash and a removable hardtop
an Eagle RV kit car, which is a Jeep CJ7 look-alike with Cortina running gear. This is undergoing a rebuild and is a 'work in progress'
a Toyota Previa T-Spirit with all the bells and whistles. It is my wifes car but I just love it for family trips and holidays.
Enough of my rambling, if you have a look around this section of the site you will find some more info on some of the cars I have owned and some photos will be added, when I can find them!
