Now - pay attention!
No sniggering at the back! This is actually a really nice product and
was a revelation to me - it proves how such a simple game can be made
very playable and addictive when presented in the right way. This is a
rare example of software and hardware in perfect harmony (another example
of this would be Tetris on Gameboy).
Electronic Yahtzee gives us a one player version of the well known dice
game in a very easy-to-use and portable format. The unit keeps your high
score which gives it a great hook - you do keep coming back trying to
top it. A game lasts less than 5 mins and is great when on the move.
The LCD display is extremely well thought out and gives all the necessary
information you require (roll no. combinations left, upper sub total etc.)
and the dice are big and easy to see. There is a nice template over which
the LCD figures are displayed that gives the dice and score sheet a polished
look.
There is a button for each die used when you are holding. The roll button
(which doubles as start new game) is big and well placed. Scoring is simple
(something which can be fiddly on PC versions of this game!) A little
cursor flashes at the 1st available combo and a number on the top right
of the screen shows what you would score against it should it be selected.
The select button is a 2 way Dpad that lets you move the indicator around
the different combos (it skips over the ones you have already used). Move
the cursor to the combo you wish to score against and press the enter
button. Easy and slickly done.
All of the buttons are well-placed and you won't make a mistake because
of the layout and size of them (unless you have really big fingers of
course!) There is sound too which is only beeps but it isn't as annoying
as you would think and there is a mute button.
This little gadget is a lesson in user interface design. It is a completely
self-contained, neatly designed unit presenting us with an enjoyable game
which itself is a satisfying mix of strategy and luck (like all the most
enjoyable games are). There is even a label on the back giving a brief
summary of the scoring rules.
My own high score is 512 - beat that! This is cheap and easy to find.
Highly recommended.
