5 Speed (dog leg 1st, direct 5th) Getrag Gearbox

Gear Selection Pattern As supplied to me! Note the modified GTE gear lever

This gearbox is about 30% lighter than the Getrag 240 normally fitted to the Manta.  It also has much better ratios for competition use.  I think it can be found in BMW 2002.

I never did get used to double de-clutching to drop from 2nd into 1st gear.  This of course was a problem when going into hairpins on hill climbs.  I believe that 1st gear had no baulk rings, like reverse on most other gearboxes.

Before fitting it to the car, I modified a GTE gear lever, which gave a much better selection than the lever it was supplied with.

To fit the gearbox to the CIH engine, a 13mm steel adapter plate was made, which located the gearbox to the old 4 speed bell housing.  Borg & Beck modified some Manta GTE clutch plates to suit the gearbox input shaft spline, each costing about £95 (Eur 145) at the time.  Fortunately, the gearbox came with a suitably modified propshaft.
