2.4l Opel 8V CIH Competition EngineIntroductionMy present 2.0L engine has now covered about 15,000 road miles and approximately 20 Hill Climb and sprint events, since it's last rebuild. It has been 100% reliable, and would probably have run for ever, if I hadn't made a poor gear change (dropped from 5th to 2nd) and subjected it to over 8500RPM while travelling down the M42 to an event in June. Also, with 4* petrol about to be made extinct, and the fact that the car is now ready for some extra power, it's time to retire the engine, together with the gearbox. The head could be modified for Unleaded/Super Unleaded petrol for less than £200. For some time I have been toying with the idea of installing a more powerful engine. The obvious, is to install one of the newer Vauxhall 16V engines, or a little less obviously the Rover V8 unit. Each has it's good and bad points, but I think that I would have gone for the Rover V8 unit, simply because big cc's means big torque which is very important in Hill Climb events. However, in the Hill Climb events that I compete in, a modified production car must use an engine block as supplied in the original vehicle. So, if I fit one of these engines, then I will be transferred into the 'Sports Libre' class which is usually home to the Class B Rally Cars, like the Metro 6R4s, Audi Quattro S1/S2s, etc. I don't think so!!!! The new 2.4L engine is to be installed in a modified 1979 Opel Manta B, and used for Hill Climb and Sprint events, as well as being driven on the road. The UK RAC Motor Sports Association class rules, for Modified Production Saloon Cars, require that the car must use an engine block as originally specified by the manufacturer. In the case of this car, this is the Opel 2.0l CIH block. In fact, the Manta 400 16 valve engine would also be acceptable, since it was homologated, but far outside my price range. Now, select from the links above for each of the five sections of the engine, and also the links for the Rolling Road set up, Engine Post Mortem and Conclusion. Back to Top |
