2.4l Opel 8V CIH Competition Engine

Project Conclusions

If you have managed to read through this project, then you have come to realise, like me, that it was a disaster.

Firstly, the original specification given to SP Performance for the cylinder head was to maximise the torque throughout the RPM range, with max RPM being around 7500 RPM.  As you can see from the flow graph of the inlet port, this has not been done.  In fact, mid-range torque has been lost, even as compared to a standard engine.  As far as the exhaust port flow is concerned, the flow graph says it all.  So to sum up, the flow check shows that the head has been modified very badly, and the engine strip down shows that the head was put together very poorly, all of which was done by SP Performance.

This head was certainly not supplied to specification, and in fact is so bad, I wouldn't have the balls to try to sell it on to some other unsuspecting sole.

Secondly, the compression of the final engine is very poor, due to a mistake by the engine builder.  In this case, however, this mistake probably saved the engine from self destructing, because of the very poor head work.

Finally, I have decided to scrap the engine and start afresh.  See the 2002 Engine pages.  I hope that you have learned something from reading about this project!  If nothing else, there are sharks out there, and even people with years of experience can get suckered by fancy adverts and impressive bullshit, be careful!
