I first started germinating Palm seeds way back in 1991 or 2 after a trip to Austria. In a florist shop in Berchtesgarten (I know it’s not in Austria - it was a day trip) I picked up a packet of palm seeds. Back home I tried to germinate the seeds inside. They germinated very quickly, and I still have one or two of the plants - Washingtonias and Phoenix canariensis. For a long time after that I tried and failed with batch after batch of seeds ordered in Britain. Some were generously replaced by the suppliers, only to face the death sentence of the Ison propagator! As I was at still at work I assumed lack of attention was the main cause and shrugged it off. There were a few other successes, but since retiring I've been trying for more. First there was little change, and I continued to bring rot and death to all palm seeds. Then I looked at the Internet. Huw’s Pleasure Garden site was extremely useful, It is an excellent resource of tips, pictures and downright enthusiasm. There have been other finds since, as I find them I include them in the text where relevant and also list them at the end of the pages.
