Final results from 2005

Finally the results are now to hand from the Clasgow City Council Open Graded Meeting at the Kelvin Hall on 28th December 2005 in which Stevie Cullen was 4th in his heat in the 1500 Metres in 5:06:60.

Garscube lady Debbie Martin blew away the Christmas cobwebs by competing in the Ayrodynamic Triathlon Club’s Turkey Trot 10k Road Race at Ayr on Boxing Day finishing in 51:00 and on Tuesday 20th December Lindsay Cunningham, competing as a guest, was timed at 15:00 in Clydesdale Harriers 2.7 Miles Christmas Handicap Road Race at Clydebank.

Garscube Harriers Christmas Handicap Road Race

The citizens of Westerton and Bearsden were treated to the sight of 37 “Santas” running the streets when Garscube Harriers held their 3.5 Miles Christmas Handicap Road Race on Sunday 18th December. The four “fat ladies” - Anita Neilson, Rachel Stevenson, Maureen O’Hara and Anne Flynn - provided further entertainment by running in the opposite direction to the race to the accompaniment of much hooting from passing motorists. Also featuring was “Wild West Santa” Robert Cuthbertson complete with cups and hat and the mother and baby team of Hazel Watson and Hannah (in buggy) ably assisted by Jill O’Neil. Theresa Miln was first Santa home and winner of the festive turkey in 23 minutes 36 seconds with a handicap of 7 minutes 35 seconds from scratch man Greg Hastie. Stephen Mulrine with a time of 18:18 was the winner of the fastest time prize.

Garscube Harriers Young Athletes 1.5 Miles Christmas Handicap Road Race

The theme was elves and pixies for the Young Athletes 1.5 Miles Christmas Handicap Road Race which was held prior to the Senior Race. Aiden Gallacher was first to finish with a time of 9 minutes 9 seconds off a handicap of 1 minutes 40 seconds from scratch runner Iain McGill who duly recorded the fastest time of 7 minutes 48 seconds. Other times in the Young Athletes Race were: Ross Martin - 7:59, Erin McGill - 8:27, Marc Austin - 8:29, Jack Austin - 8:56, Andrew Smith - 10:05, Ritchie Austin & Rhona Martin - both 10:17, Peter Gallacher - 10:27, Laura Donohoe - 10:45, Rory Stevenson - 11:00, Declan Neilson - 11:49, Michelle Cullen - 13:39 and Cody Stevenson - 16:17.

Scottish Athletics West District Cross Country Championships

Seven Garscube runners took part in the Scottish Athletics West District Cross Country Championships at Royal Academy, Irvine on Saturday 10th December. Heather Akers was 2nd Veteran runner to complete the Senior Women’s 6,400 Metres Race in a time of 26:33 followed by Marian Kelly 29th in 27:33 and Jenny Greaves 30th in 27:39. The Garscube Ladies Team finished in 5th place with a total of 78 points. Davie Geddes was first Garscube Harrier home in the Senior Men’s 10,000 Metre Race in 40:40 followed by James Taylor - 42:15, Dermot Williamson - 45:36 and Stevie Cullen - 46:19.

Finally three Garscube men completed the Florence Marathon on Sunday 27th November. John Murray was timed at 3:27:44, Gerald Hartley at 3:33:03 and Alan McNeill at 3:37:15.

Alex D. MacDonald Memorial Cross Country Races

Ninety one runners completed Garscube Harriers Club’s Alex D. MacDonald Memorial Cross Country Races for Young Athletes which were held in the Garscube Estate on Saturday 3rd December. The Under 11 Boys 1 Mile Race was won by Jamie Crowe of Shettleston Harriers in 6 minutes 17 seconds and Cameron Barr was the first Garscube boy to cross the finishing line in 6th place in 6:28. The Under 11 Girls race over the same distance was won by Maria Milliken of Kirkintilloch Olympians in 6:36 followed by Erin McGill of Garscube Harriers in 6:37 and Aimee Clarke of Broomhill Sports Club in 6:54. Other Garscube runners in the 1 mile race were - Girls ­ Eilidh Gillen 12th in 8:01, Boys - Jack Austin 8th in 6:45, Craig Colvin - 14th in 7:15, Martin Douglas - 17th in 7:36, Laurie McLean - 19th in 7:44, Ben Steven - 21st in 7:46, Ritchie Austin - 24th in 7:58 and Peter Gallagher - 29th in 8:27.

Andrew Dearie of Shettleston Harriers won the Under 13 Boys 1.5 Miles Race in 9 minutes 33 seconds by one second from David Vernon of Nithsdale Athletic Club. Stephanie Barnes of Nithsdale Athletic Club was a clear winner of the Under 13 Girls 1.5 Miles Race in 11 minutes 23 seconds finishing 23 seconds in front of second placed Alice Smith of Garscube Harriers. Other Garscube runners in the 1? miles race were - Boys - 9th Ross Martin - 10:27, 10th Marc Austin - 10:30, 19th Peter Meadows - 12:46. Girls - 6th Sophie Jones 12:21.

Unfortunately there were no Garscube runners in the 2 Miles Under 15 and Under 17 Race. Ross Hastings of Nithsdale Athletic Club was 1st Under 17 Man to finish in 10:56, Lachlan Oates of Shettleston Harriers was 1st Under 15 Boy in 11:03 and Claire McAuley of Giffnock North Amateur Athletic Club was 1st Under 15 Girl in 15:02.

McCaa Cup 6 Miles Cross Country Handicap Race

There was a record turnout of 21 runners, 20 of whom finished, for the McCaa Cup 6 Miles Cross Country Handicap Race which was held after the Young Athletes Races. The Cup was won this year by Anne Marie Cullen who was timed at 49:45 off a handicap of 18:00. Club President Davie Geddes was 2nd in 39:51 off 7:50. Other times were: Benny McLaughlin - 38:28, Marco Consani - 41:04, James Taylor - 42:27, Pam McKay - 42:52, Scott Nicol - 42:53, Heather Akers - 42:57, Jon Austin - 44:32, Stevie Cullen - 45:12, Dermot Williamson - 45:26, Kathryn Ellis - 45:47, Robert Cuthbertson - 47:27, Carol Nicol - 47:40, Dave Heppell - 48:17, Brian Lennox - 49:36, Sean Millikan - 51:29, Alan Speirs - 53:30, Mark Turnbull - 59:42 and Charlie Kilshaw - 68:53.

Glasgow University Open 5 Miles Road Race

Twenty four members of Garscube Harriers turned out for the Glasgow University Hares and Hounds Open 5 Miles Road Race which started from the Garscube Estate on Saturday 19th November. Greg Hastie was the first Garscube man to cross the finishing line in 12th place in 27 minutes 1 second followed by Lindsay Cunninghan 19th in 27:10 and Stephen Mulrine 33rd in 28:12. Heather Akers was 2nd Female Vet to complete the race in 31:57, 50 seconds in front of Carole Gilmour who was the next Garscube lady home. Other Garscube times were: Rob McLennan - 28:32, Jim McAneny - 31:57, Kenny Macanna - 32:09, Marco Consani - 32:42, Scott Nicol - 33:12, Andy Neilson - 33:21, Stevie Cullen - 33:48, Paul Consani - 33:58, Lesley Chapman - 34:04, John Dryden - 34:26, Davie Geddes & Marian Kelly both 34:28, Robert Cuthbertson - 34:39, Paul Goddard - 34:50, Maureen O’Hara - 34:56, Jon Austin - 35:12, Dave Heppell - 37:51, Stuart Irvine - 39:39 and Gordon Hamilton - 39:57.

Heather Akers runs for Scotland.

Heather Akers was selected to run for Scotland in the British Veterans Cross County International in Dublin on Saturday 12th November and ran well to finish 4th in the Scottish F40 Team in a time of 23:56 which earned her a medal as the Scotland Team finished 3rd with a total of 24 points.

Finally the results are now to hand for the National Cross Country Relays at Cumbernauld on Saturday 22nd October. In the Senior Men’s 4x2? miles relay the Garscube “A” Team of Rob McLennan - 15:31, Jim McAneny - 17:05, Marco Consani - 16:22 and Davie Atkin -- 16:07 finished in 51st place with a total time of 1:05:05 and in an incomplete “B” Team Kenny Macanna was timed at 17:02, Stevie Cullen at 18:39 and James Taylor at 17:16. The Garscube Ladies Team of Marian Kelly - 18:31, Jill O’Neil - 18:36 and Maureen O’Hara - 19:10 were 26th with a total of 56:17 in the Senior Ladies 3x2.5 miles relay.

Dunbartonshire AAA Cross Country Championships

Twenty members of Garscube Harriers competed in the Dunbartonshire AAA Cross Country Championships at Kirkintilloch on Saturday 12th November. The Garscube Boys were the winning Team in the Under 11 1 Mile Race with Cameron Barr finishing in 5th place in 5 minutes 30 seconds, Jack Austin 8th in 5 minutes 44 seconds and Andrew Smith 10th in 5:56 to produce a team score of 23 points, 2 points ahead of Broomhill Primary School. Erin McGill won the medal for finishing 3rd in the Under 11 Girls Race over the same distance in 5:39 and Marc Austin was 4th in the Under 13 Boys 2 Miles Race in 13:44. Greg Hastie was first Garscube man to finish in the Senior Men’s 6 Miles Race in 6th place in 34:44 followed by Lindsay Cunningham 7th in 36:05, Rob McLennan 13th in 37:36 and Iain Mennie 27th in 40:17. The Garscube “A” Team finished in 3rd place with a total of 53 points. Other Garscube performances in the Senior Men’s Race were Athole Smith 33rd ­ 41:56, James Taylor 34th ­ 41:58, Scott Nicol 36th ­ 42:09, Jonathan Austin 45th ­ 45:16, Robert Cuthbertson 47th ­ 46:08 and Dermot Williamson 49th - 46:48. Garscube Harriers also won the medals for 3rd Team in the Senior Women’s 4 miles race with a total of 29 points. Carole Gilmour finished 7th in 28:55, Marian Kelly was 8th in 29:02 and Carol Nicol 14th in 30:50. Other Garscube runners in the Senior Women’s race were Karen McIlvenna 15th in 31:15 and Karen-Anne Stevenson 21st in 35:58.

The Garscube Ladies Team of Mairi Stanley 2nd lady in 1:31:50, Kathryn Ellis 6th in 1:37:33 and Maureen MacLeod 10th in 1:39:26 won the 1st Ladies Team Prize with a total of 18 points in Eddies’ Half Marathon which was held in wet and windy conditions at Fort William on Sunday 6th November. Times of other Garscube runners in the race were Iain Cullen ­ 1:23:12, Carol Martin ­ 1:39:31 and Margaret Douglas ­ 1:43:59.

On the same day 3 Garscube runners ran in the ING New York City Marathon. Colin McKay finished in 3:27:56, Aileen Spiers in 4:11:31 and Roisin Lynch in 4:13:15.

Garscube Harriers’ Senior Mens and Ladies 5 Miles Road Championships.

New member Greg Hastie celebrated joining the Club with a convincing victory in Garscube Harriers’ Senior Mens 5 Miles Road Championships at Bearsden on Saturday 5th November. Greg finished in 26 minutes 30 seconds, 1 minutes and fourteen seconds in front of 2nd placed Stephen Mulrine who was followed by Rob McLennan in 28:49 and Marco Consani in 29:55. There was a closer contest for the Senior Ladies Championship over the same distance with Heather Akers taking the title in 31:12, finishing 13 seconds in front of Carole Gilmour. Robert Cuthbertson won the sealed handicap in 34:57 off 9:15 producing a net time of 25:42. Other times in the Senior Championships were: Jim McAneny - 29:56, John Weir - 30:14, Davie Geddes - 30:19, Athole Smith - 30:42, Kenny Macanna - 30:59, James Taylor - 31:10, Andy Griffiths - 31:20, Gerry Montgomery - 31:48, Paul Consani - 31:53, Craig McWilliam (Guest) - 31:54, Stevie Cullen - 32:05, Alison Winship - 32:08, Scott Nicol - 32:12, Jill O’Neil - 32:18, Jonathan Austin - 34:48, Karen-Anne Stevenson - 38:39 and Theresa Miln - 40:17.

Young Athletes Road Race Championships

In the Young Athletes Road Race Championships held prior to the Senior Race, Cameron Barr won the Under 11 Boys 1? miles race in 7:41, Erin McGill the Under 11 Girls 1? miles race in 8:13, Victoria Stevenson the Under 13 Girls 1? miles race in 9:35, Marc Austin the Under 13 Boys 2? miles race in 16:34, Iain McGill the Under 15 Boys 2? miles race in 15:32 and Adam McAneny the Under 17 Men’s 2? miles race in 14:50. Other times in the Young Athletes Races - Under 11 Boys - Craig Colvin - 8:24, Andrew Smith - 8:28, Jack Austin - 9:05, Martin Douglas - 9:06, Ritchie Austin - 9:29, Lewis Stevenson - 9:53, Rory Stevenson - 9:58, Scott Colvin - 10:30: Under 11 Girls - Rhona Martin - 9:25, Aimee Dougan - 10:18: Under 13 Boys - Ross Martin - 19:16.

Garscube lady Anne Flynn travelled to the Emerald Isle to compete in the Adidas Dublin City Marathon on Monday 31st October and finished in the very commendable time of 4:05:56.

Allan Scally Memorial Road Relays

The previous Saturday Garscube Harriers had 5 Teams competing in the Allan Scally Memorial Road Relays at Baillieston. The Garscube “A” Team featured in the prize list in the Women’s 3x4.8miles relay with a very consistent performance by Alison Winship 31:13, Mairi Stanley 31:14 and Jill O’Neil 31:29 allowing them to claim 2nd place in 1:33:56 overtaking the Shettleston Harriers Ladies team on the final lap after starting the final leg nearly 3 minutes adrift of Shettleston. The Garscube “B” Team of Jude Austin 34:18, Carol Nicol 34:43 and Marian Kelly 32:58 finished 10th in 1:41:59. The Garscube “A” Team of Rob McLennan 27:02, Lindsay Cunningham 26:07, Stephen Mulrine 27:04 and Marco Consani 28:57 finished in 11th position in a total time of 1:49:10 in the Men’s 4x4.8 miles relay. The “B” Team (John Weir 29:33, Athole Smith 30:08, Andy Griffiths 30:45 and Davie Geddes 30:09 were 31st in 2:00:35 while the “C” Team of Scott Nicol 31:44, Kenny Macanna 31:00, Stevie Cullen 31:08 and James Taylor 31:15 finished 38th in 2:05:07.

Finally on Sunday 16th October Ann Clanachan turned in a fine performance in the ING Amsterdam Marathon breaking the 4 hour barrier to finish in 3:56:16.

Dunbartonshire AAA Cross Country Relay Championships Click here for pictures

Garscube Harriers were victorious in both the Senior Men, Senior Women and Under 11 Boys races at the Dunbartonshire AAA Cross Country Relay Championships at the Garscube Estate on Saturday 15th October.

Stephen Mulrine was timed at 14 minutes 32 seconds on the opening leg of the Men’s 4x2.5 miles relay handing over in 5th place to Lindsay Cunningham who gained two places to finish in 14 minutes 24 seconds. Greg Hastie pulled back a further place in the 3rd leg in 13:56 and Benny McLaughlin anchored the Team to victory on the last leg in 14:25, winning the medal for fastest Veteran in the process, to produce a total time of 57:17.

Other Garscube results in the Men’s race were:

B Team 6th - 63:24 (Ian Eccles 16:00, Rob McLennan 15:19, Davie Atkin 15:54, Marco Consani 16:11)

C Team 14th 68:02 (James Taylor 17:07, Andy Griffiths 17:08, Athole Smith 16:58, Davie Geddes 16:49)

D Team 15th 68:18 (Jim McAneny 16:54, John Weir 16:46, Kenny Macanna 17:29, Scott Nicol 17:09)

E Team 19th 71:42 (Peter McGlynn 16:58, Jonathan Austin 18:06, Stevie Cullen 18:16, Dermot Williamson 18:22)

The Garscube Ladies made a successful defence of their title in the Senior Women’s 3x2.5 Miles Relay. Heather Akers led the Team into 2nd place in 17:04 on the 1st lap also taking the Female Veteran’s Title, Alison Winship gained the lead in the middle lap with a performance of 17:11 and Mairi Stanley coasted to victory in 17:44 to produce a team time of 51:59 nearly a minute in front of 2nd placed Clydesdale Harriers.

Garscube Young Athletes also had a successful day with Cameron Barr winning the Under 11 Boys 1 Mile Race in 6:13 and the Garscube Team of Cameron, Craig Colvin who finished 4th in 6:29 and Ritchie Austin 8th in 7:30 taking the Under 11 Boys Team Title with an aggregate time of 20:12. Marc Austin was the sole Garscube runner in the Under 13 Boys 1.5 miles race finishing in 8th place in 10:39 and two Garscube girls ran in the Under 13 Race over the same distance. Laura Donohoe was 14th in 13:08 and Michelle Cullen 15th in 13:57. Adam McAneny was timed at 16:08 in the first leg of the Under 17 Men’s 3x2.5 miles relay with no Garscube runner to take over from him,.

West District Cross Country Relay Championships

Seven Garscube runners were in action in the West District Cross Country Relay Championships at Dam Park, Ayr on Saturday 8th October. In the Senior Men’s 4x4000 Metres Relay the Garscube Team of Rob McLennan 14:56, Stevie Cullen 17:19, Davie Atkin 15:19 and Dermot Williamson 18:21 finished in 36th place in 65:55 while the Senior Ladies Team of Heather Akers 16:46, Jill O’Neil 17:36 and Marian Kelly 17:50 were 4th in the Ladies 3x4000 metres Relay in 52:12 missing out on the medals by a mere 19 seconds.

Two Garscube men had another successful day on Sunday 2nd October when they competed in the Scottish Veterans Harrier Club’s Half Marathon Championships at Clydebank. Benny McLaughlin was the winner in 77:39 finishing nearly 1.5 minutes in front of 2nd placed Robert Wilson of Greenock Glenpark Harriers while Jonathan Austin was the winner of the Handicap in 98:48 off 35:30.

Finally also on 2nd October five Garscube runners travelled north, three to compete in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and two in the Baxters River Ness 10K. Scott Nicol was timed at 3:29:33, Carol Nicol 3:32:09 and Jo Pearson 3:51:43 in the marathon while Kathryn Ellis took 44min 22sec and Debbie Martin 50 min 49 secs to complete the 10K.

McAndrew Relay

Twenty four Garscube Harriers runners turned out for the first event of the Winter 2005/06 Season ­ the McAndrew Road Relay Races at Jordanhill on Saturday 1st October. In the Men’s 4x3.25 miles race the Garscube “A” Team finished in 12th place in a total time of 1 hour 12 minutes 27 seconds with Stephen Mulrine recording a time of 18:03 on the first lap followed by Lindsay Cunningham in 17:41, Ian Eccles in 18:41 and Benny McLaughlin in 18:02. The Garscube “B” Team of Marco Consani 19:33, Rob McLennan 18:51, Athole Smith 20:47 and Iain Mennie 19:55 was 33rd in a total time of 1:19:06 while the “C” Team was 50th in 1:22:29 with Marco Consani having a busy day on the anchor leg after his efforts in the “B” Team finishing in 20:45. Other members of the “C” Team were John Murray 21:08, Andy Griffiths 21:10 and Davie Atkin 19:26. The “D” Team of Peter McGlynn 22:16, Kenny Macanna 21:29, Dave Heppell 23:54 and James Taylor 21:08 finished in 52nd place in 1:28:47. The Club had two Teams in the Ladies 3x3.25 Miles Relay. The “A” Team of Heather Akers, third fastest female vet in the race in 20:25, Carole Gilmour 22:04 and Alison Winship 21:20 finished in 7th place in 1:03:49 while the “B” Team of Marion Kelly 22:30, Jill O’Neil 21:55 and Maureen O’Hara 22:56 were 10th in 1:07:21. Jonathan Austin was timed at 22:16, Stevie Cullen at 21:50 and Karen Anne Stevenson at 28:47 in an incomplete and mixed “E” Team.

September Race Reports

Benny McLaughlin was 2nd Male Vet to complete the Round Cumbrae 10 Mile Road Race starting at Millport, Isle of Cumbrae on Sunday 11th September in 57:05 and Lesley Chapman was first Lady Vet over 45 in 72:39.

Garscube runners competed in 4 different venues on Sunday 18th September.

Three were in action in the BUPA Great North Run from Newcastle from Newcastle to South Shields. Lindsay Cunningham who ran for the Leukaemia Research Fund was originally engaged as pacemaker for Tony Audenshaw better known as Bob Hope from ITVs Emmerdale Farm who was aiming to complete the race in 1 hour 25 minutes. However at the last minute Lindsay was freed from his pacing duties leaving him free to run his own race and finish in 107th place 1 hour 17 minutes 15 seconds. Also running in this race were the mother and daughter “team” of Lesley and Kate Chapman. Kate finished the race in 1:25:16 while her mother Lesley finished exactly 20 minutes later in 1:45:16.

There were some fine performances by Garscube runners in the “Wallace 700” City of Stirling 10k Road Race with Ian Eccles timed at 36:28, Marco Consani at 38:06 and Andy Neilson at 40:42 all setting personal best performances at the distance. Garscube Lady Ann Clanachan also completed the race in a time of 44:57.

Four Garscube runners competed in the St Andrews Hospice 10k Road Race at Strathclyde Park, Motherwell. Heather Akers was 2nd Lady to finish in 39:17 while Davie Atkin ran 37:15, John Weir was timed at 41:24 and Colin Gilchrist at 42:27.

Six Garscube Young Athletes competed in the Allander Autumn Aquathon at Allander Leisure Centre, Bearsden organised by Glasgow Triathlon Club. Jack Austin won the 9 and 10 year old boys race consisting of a 150 metre swim followed by a 2 kilometre run in a total time of 12 minutes 18 seconds, Martin Douglas was 3rd in 13:36 and Declan Neilson 7th in 16:19. Erin McGill was 7th in 17:05 in the 9 and 10 year old girls race over the same distance. Marc Austin won the 11 and 12 year old boys race (200 metre swim and 2k run) in 12:06 and Iain McGill was 2nd in the 13 and 14 year old boys race (400 metre swim and 3k run) in 22:02.

Seven Garscube Men competed in the George Cummings 4x2.6 Miles Road Race at Houston, Renfrewshire on Saturday 24th September. The Garscube “A” Team of Stephen Mulrine 14:27, Marco Consani 15:49, Andy Griffiths 16:48 and Lindsay Cunningham 14:21 finished in 17th place in 61:25 while in an incomplete “B” Dermot Williamson was timed at 18:48, Stevie Cullen at 17:32 and James Taylor at 17:50.

Two Garscube runners competed in the British Masters Athletics Federation 10k Road Race at Strathclyde Park also on Saturday 24th September. With a very strong southerly wind and a suspiciously long final 2k adversely affecting performances Heather Akers was timed at 40:45 and Stuart Irvine at 49:58.

Finally two runners were in action in different races on Sunday 25th September. Jayne Barnes completed the Dumfries Half Marathon in 1:38:07 and Jim McCulloch was timed at 54:02 in the Linlithgow 10k Road Race.

Mark McIntosh was in action in the East Neuk 10k Road Race at Anstruther, Fife on Sunday 25th September finishing in 39:09 and in the Ayrshire Harriers Clubs Association’s Round Cumbrae 10 Miles Road Race on Sunday 11th September: Jill O’Neil - 73:17, Marian Kelly - 74:13 and Mark Turnbull - 93:52.

Great Scottish Run

There was a large turnout in the glorious sunshine of Garscube runners, 75 in total, for the Fresh “N” Lo Great Scottish Run Half Marathon, 10k and Junior Race at Glasgow Green on Sunday 14th September. Despite the heat which peaked at an unseasonal 26°C during the day some excellent performances were recorded including Scott Nicol improving his personal best for the Half Marathon by over 6 minutes to 1:32:32.

First Garscube man home in the Half Marathon was Lindsay Cunningham in 1:24:06 followed by Iain Cullen in 1:25:28 and Colin McKay in 1:28:54. Leading Garscube ladies were Carole Gilmour in 1:37:00, Jayne Barnes in 1:39:52 and Maureen O’Hara in 1:40:30. Possibly due to a fault in his Microchip Benny McLaughlin who finished in 9th place in 34:48 was omitted from the officials results in the 10k race but he still received his prize! First Garscube Lady home in the 10k and 6th lady overall was Kate Chapman in 39:18 followed by Heather Akers 9th Lady and 1st Lady Vet Overall in 40:08. For some reason Heather was also omitted from the results appearing merely as “unknown runner”. Anne Marie Cullen shaved a further 9 seconds off her personal best for the distance by finishing in 48:52. 17 Garscube Young Athletes competed in the Great Scottish Junior Run 3k Race.

Erin McGill finished 1st out of 122 girls in the F9 category in 12:31. James Ross was 2nd out of 158 runners in the M10 category in 11:38, Alice Smith was 3rd in the F11 category out of 80 girls with 12:54 and Adam McAneny was 3rd M16 out of 15 runners in 10:01. More September Race Reports

On the same day as The Great Scottish Run, Davie Atkin was 1st Veteran over 45 to complete the Great Langdale Marathon in the Lake District in a time of 3:32:52. The organisers claim that this race is the toughest road marathon in the world. Davie had applied to run the half marathon on the same day but as entries were full the organisers let him run the Marathon instead on one of the hottest days of the year in the area. While agreeing that it is the toughest road marathon he has ever run Davie says that it is not as hard as the Devil o’ the Highlands 43 mile mountain trail run from Tyndrum to Fort William which he ran 4 weeks beforehand finishing in 11th place in 7 hours 24 minutes with thanks to Iain Mennie and Iain Cullen for their back up and support.

On 4th September Club President Davie Geddes competed in the Moray Marathon at Elgin finishing in 16th place and 9th Veteran in 3:17:23.

On Wednesday 7th September Stuart Irvine participated in a trial by the governing body Scottish Athletics Limited for the reintroduction of handicaps in road races in Scotland held in conjunction with the Self Transendence 5k Race at the Meadows, Edinburgh. Stuart finished in 24:31 and an adjusted time after handicap of 14:39. After the race it became evident that some refinements to the handicapping system are required and Stuart still has no idea how his handicap was calculated!

August Race Reports

On Saturday 6th August Kenny Macanna took part in the Islay Half Marathon at Bowmore finishing in 32nd place in 1 hour 37 minutes 39 seconds. On the following week on Saturday 14th August two Garscube Ladies travelled east to run in the Forth Road Bridge Pitreavie 10k Road Race. Elizabeth Grant was timed at 51:06 and Mary Hirshell at 60:11.

Nine Garscube runners were in action in Springburn Harriers Canal Canter 7000 Metres multi-terrain race at Bishopbriggs on Wednesday 17th August. The Garscube Team of Benny McLaughlin, First Male Vet and 2nd overall in 22:22, Lindsay Cunningham 3rd in 22:31 and Ian Eccles 14th in 24:18 finished 1st with 19 points beating local rivals Victoria Park AAC by 15 points in the process but unfortunately there were no team prizes. Heather Akers was 2nd Lady Vet and 3rd Lady overall to finish in 26:26. Other Garscube performances were Marco Consani - 25:17, John Murray - 27.00, Jayne Barnes - 29:04 and Mark Turnbull - 32:01.

Also on the 17th August, three Garscube runners turned out for Irvine Athletic Club’s 10k Road Race on Wednesday 17th August. Iain Mennie was the first Garscube runner to cross the finishing line in 38 minutes 58 seconds showing very good pace judgement to beat his target time of 39:00 by a mere 2 seconds, John Baraclough was timed at 47:00 and Anne Marie Cullen knocked over 3 minutes off her personal best for the distance by finishing in 49:01.

Stevie Cullen travelled to Spain to compete in the World Masters Athletics Championships which were held in San Sebastian from 22nd August until 3rd September. Stevie finished in 68th place in a time of 38:14 in the M45 8km Cross Country Race but sadly did reach the final of either the track events he entered as, due to a hamstring injury, Stevie lasted only 250 metres in his 800 metre heat and finished in 7th place in 82:57 in the 400 metre heat so did not progress to the next round.

Three Garscube Men travelled to the Island of Bute on Saturday 20th August to compete in the Bute Highland Games 10k Road Race which was held in glorious sunshine defying the local weather predictions. First home for the Club was Mark Turnbull in 49:00 followed by Stuart Irvine in 51:35 and Mike Scott in 57:49. On the same day three Garscube Ladies turned out for the Loch Lomond 10k Trail Race at Balloch, Jayne Barnes was timed at 45:45, Marian Kelly at 47:57 and Debbie Martin at 52:08. On Sunday August 21st Mhairi Stanley was timed at 43:39 in the Forfar 10k Road Race, Andy Neilson finished in 20:19 in the Achlles Heel Bellahouston Road Runners 5k Road Race in Bellahouston Park and Heather Akers was first lady to complete the St. Margaret’s Hospice 8k Road Race at Clydebank in 31:59.

Thirteen Garscube runners braved high winds and driving rain to run in the Paisley Vision 10k Road Race on Sunday 28th August. Lindsay Cunningham was first Garscube man to finish in 15th position in 35:30 and first Garscube Lady was Heather Akers who was timed at 40:45 and was presented with the prize for 9th lady at the prizegiving ceremony in County Square after the finish. Various Races during June and July

Garscube Harrier Elizabeth Grant was third lady to cross the finishing line in the Bothwell and Uddingston Run for Fun 10k Race at Bothwell Primary School on Sunday 26th June in a time of 52 minutes 22 seconds.

Two Garscube Runners competed in the Dollar Law 9 Miles Hill Race on the following Saturday 2nd July. Euan Mackay was 13th in 1:39:36 while Alison Winship was 2nd lady to finish in 1:58:33

Four Garscube runners travelled to Arran to compete in the island’s Half Marathon at Blackwaterfoot on Sunday 3rd July. Mairi Stanley was presented with the Shield for first Lady Vet to finish in a time of 1:33, Maureen MacLeod was 2nd Lady Vet in 1:41:40 and Margaret Douglas finished 3rd Lady Vet just behind Maureen with a personal best time for the distance of 1:41:41. The trio were the first Ladies Team to finish but unfortunately there was no ladies team prize. Garscube man John Murray also competed finishing in 1:32.

Davie Atkin was in action in the Isle of Harris Half Marathon at Stornoway on Saturday 9th July finishing 3rd Male Vet in 1:25:24.

On the following day Garscube’s Stevie Cullen competing second claim for Helensburgh AAC was fifth in the A string Discus with a throw of 14.46 metres and 6th in the A string 200 metres in a time of 30 seconds in the Central and South of Scotland Athletic League Division 3 match at Ayr.

Two Garscube Ladies took part in the Moffat Festival of Running 15k Road Race on Tuesday 12th July. Elizabeth Grant was timed at 1:25:40 and Mary Leonard at 1:44:06 and two Garscube Men ran in the Scottish Athletics Corporate 5km Run at Glasgow Green on Wednesday 13th July. Benny McLaughlin running for Bishops Consulting finished 7th in 17:58 while Ian Eccles was 20th in 19:27.

Congratulations to Garscube’s Coinneach Morrison who was representing the Western Isles and competed in the NatWest Island Games in the Half Marathon on Friday 15th July finishng 20th place in 1:29:25.

Four Garscube runners competed in the Dunbartonshire AAA Track & Field Championships at Linwood on Sunday 17th July and collected six medals between them. Heather Akers was the winner of the Senior Women’s 800 Metres Championship in 2:35.2, Robert MacFarlane was 2nd in the Senior Men’s 400 Metres in 62.3 and 3rd in the Senior Men’s 800 Metres in 2:24.6, Stephen Mulrine was 2nd in the Senior Men’s 800 Metres in 2:09.8 while Stevie Cullen won two medals for 3rd place - in the Senior Men’s 400 Metres in 68.8 and in the Senior Men’s 1500 metres in 6:09.1. Stevie was also 4th in the 800 Metres in 2:37.8 and Robert was 5th in the 100 Metres in 14.4.

Prize winners at the Polaroid Vale of Leven 10K

Garscube Harriers featured prominently in the prizewinners list for the 2005 Polaroid Series of 10k Road Races culminating in the Vale of Leven 10k Race at Loch Lomond Shores, Balloch on Sunday 19th June. The Club won the prize for first Men’s Team in the Series with Iain Cullen, Lindsay Cunningham, Davie Geddes, Euan MacKay, Benny McLaughlin and Rob McLennan contributing to victory. Lindsay also won the 3rd individual men’s prize and Iain the prize for 2nd Male Vet over 40. Other Garscube prizewinners were: Carole Gilmore 5th lady, Diane Clark 6th lady and Heather Akers 2nd Lady Vet over 35.

Kirkintilloch Olympians 10k Canal Bank Race

Nine members of Garscube Harriers were in action on Thursday 23rd June in Kirkintilloch Olympians 10k Canal Bank Race in warm sunny weather with a gentle breeze offering runners little relief from the humid conditions. Euan MacKay was first Garscube man to cross the finishing line and receive the prize for 3rd Male Vet with a time of 36 minutes 12 seconds and well clear of 2nd placed Garscube man Ian Eccles who finished in 22nd place overall with a time of 39:46. Alison Winship was first Garscube lady to complete the course in 41:21. Other Garscube performances were: John Murray - 40:51, Marco Consani - 40:56, James Taylor - 41:32, Lynn Fairbairn - 49:05, Paul Clark - 51:28 and Charlie Kilshaw - 1:10:18

Belarus Liberation Day 8k Road Race

Stephen Mulrine took advantage of a holiday in Belarus by helping that country to celebrate their freedom from Nazi occupation by competing in their Liberation Day 8k Road Race on Saturday 25th June in the town of Borisov which is about 45 miles from the capital, Minsk. Stephen finished in a creditable 2nd place overall and first in the M35-M39 age group in 29:32.

Diet Coke East Kilbride Half Marathon

Four Garscube runners competed in the Diet Coke East Kilbride Half Marathon on Sunday 26th June. Davie Geddes was the fastest runner from the Club with a time of 1:24:08 followed by John Murray - 1:30:13, Colin Gilchrist - 1:33:07 and new member Debbie Martin with an inaugural time of 2:00:07.

Calderglen Harriers 10k Trail Race

Finally on Friday 1st July six Garscube runners competed in the Calderglen Harriers 10k Trail Race at East Kilbride Sports Club. Lindsay Cunningham was first Garscube man to finish in 9th place in 37:19 and Alison Winship the sole Garscube lady to take part was 2nd lady to finish in 43:45. Other Garscube times: Euan MacKay - 39:21, Davie Atkin - 40:42, Colin Gilchrist - 45:34 and Andy Neilson - 48:35.

East Renfrewshire 10k

Garscube Harrier Alison Winship was 2nd lady to finish in a time of 40 minutes 56 seconds in the Greaves Sports Festival of Running East Renfrewshire 10k Road Race at Rouken Glen Park, Giffnock on Thursday 16th June. Euan Mackay was first Garscube man to complete the race and 8th Male Veteran in 36:13 followed by John Murray - 40:51, Jayne Barnes - 45:51, Mark Turnbull - 47:31, Lynn Fairbairn - 48:04 and Mary Leonard - 1:00:09.

Polaroid Vale of Leven 10k

Thirty one Garscube runners turned out for the final race this year of the Polaroid 10k Road Race Series ­ the Vale of Leven 10k at Loch Lomond Shores, Balloch on Sunday 19th June. Lindsay Cunningham was first Garscube man to finish in 15th place Euan Mackay, Iain Cullen and Rob McLennan were 7th, 8th and 9th Male Vets respectively to complete the race and John Weir was 28th Male Vet. Garscube runners turned out for two events on Wednesday 22nd June and had a successful day. Heather Akers won the Ladies Championship in the Scottish Veteran Harriers Club 5k Road Race Championships at Clydebank in a time of 18:53 and Iain Cullen won the medal for finishing 3rd in the M40 category in 17:06 while Alison Winship was first lady to complete the Cort-Ma-Law 6 mile hill race at Lennoxtown in 1:07:37.

Edinburgh Marathon

Four members of Garscube Harriers competed in the Edinburgh Marathon which was held on Sunday 12th June. First to cross the finishing line was Scott Nicol in a time of 3 hours 41 minutes 31 seconds followed by Carol Nicol in 3:43:13, Andrew Clark in 3:49:38 and Davie Atkin in 4:52:30. In the Marathon Relay at the same venue the “Team 10529” lead by Garscube’s Kenny Macanna finished in 3:02:52.

Andrew and Davie had a busy weekend as the previous day they ran in the Isle of Skye Half Marathon at Portree. Andrew was first home for the Club in 64th place in 1:46:30 but it was a closer race this time as Davie finished just one place and 2 seconds behind him.

Polaroid Dumbarton 10k (incoporating The Garscube Harriers 10K Road Race Championship).

There was a record turnout from Garscube Harrier of 52 runners on Thursday 9th June for the Polaroid Dumbarton 10k race which incorporates the Garscube Harriers 10k Road Championships. The Men’s Champion this year is Lindsay Cunningham who finished in 14th place overall in 33:41 after a close contest with Benny McLaughlin who ended the race 1 place and 3 seconds adrift of Lindsay. The Ladies Championship was won very comfortably this year by Heather Akers in 39:17 just 1 second short of 2 minutes in front of Mairi Stanley and Carole Gilmour who were both timed at 41:16. Bearsden and Milngavie Highland Games 10k

Eight Members of Garscube Harriers took part in the Bearsden and Milngavie Highland Games 10k Road Race at Burnbrae last Saturday. Benny McLaughlin was first Garscube man and First Male Vet to cross the finishing line at the West of Scotland Football Club Ground in 2nd place overall in 36 minutes 6 seconds for which he won a prize of 3 months Subscription to the Next Generation Club in Anniesland. Alison Winship who was first Garscube lady to finish also featured in the prize list with a 2 months Subscription to the Next Generation Club for finishing 2nd lady in 43:08. All prizes for this race were donated by the Next Generation Club. Other Garscube performances were Euan MacKay 2nd Male Vet - 37:12, Davie Geddes 3rd Male Vet - 38:43, John Weir 8th Male Vet - 41:22, Athole Smith 9th Male Vet - 41:38, Mark Turnbull 21st Male Vet - 49:44 and Sally Goddard 12th Lady - 1:04:00

Mark Turnbull was the sole Garscube runner to take part in the third race in Bellahouston Harriers 2 Mile Race Series in Pollok Country Park on Monday 6th June. Mark finished in 30th place in 13:41.

Polaroid Clydebank 10k

Thirty Six Garscube Runners were in action in the Polaroid Clydebank 10k Road Race on Thursday 2nd June. Iain Cullen was first Garscube Man to finish and 3rd Male Vet over 40 in a time of 36:46, 4 seconds in front of Rob McLennan who was 4th Male Vet over 40 and Heather Akers was first Garscube Lady in 40:01. West Highland Way Relay

Garscube Harriers annual West Highland Way Relay from Milngavie to Fort William was held on Saturday 4th June. Starting from Milngavie at 7am the race was held in intermittent sunshine and showers as far as the Kingshouse Hotel. Thereafter conditions rapidly deteriorated and it was raining steadily as the race finished in Fort William at the start of the Glen Nevis Road. The “A” Team of Lesley Chapman, Heather Akers, Scott Nicol, Maureen MacLeod, Iain Cullen, Davie Geddes, Davie Atkin, Stevie Cullen, Jon Austin, Athole Smith, Euan MacKay and Alison Winship finished in 13 hours 24 minutes and 58 seconds while the “B” Team of Karen-Anne Stevenson, Jude Austin, Carol Martin, Margaret Douglas, Dave Heppell, Davie Atkin, John Dryden, Jill O’Neil, Karen McIlvenna, Anne Flynn, Maureen O’Hara and Charlie Kilshaw covered the ground in 14:36:02.

Finally Jude Austin competed in the Kirkcudbright Academy Half Marathon on Saturday 28th May and was 3rd Lady Vet to finish in 1:35:49.

Two members of Garscube Harriers competed in the Scottish Veteran Harriers Club Walter Ross Memorial 10k Road Race at Lochinch on Sunday 15th May and both were winners. Benny McLaughlin won the race in a time of 34 minutes 15 seconds while Heather Akers won the medal for first lady to cross the finishing line in 39:47. This race is held annually in memory of Walter Ross who founded the Scottish Veteran Harriers Club in 1970 and was a member of Garscube Harriers for many years.

John Murray was in action in Johnnie Walker Kilmarnock Harriers 10k Road Race at St Joseph’s Academy, Kilmarnock on Wednesday 18th May finishing in 41:18.

A large band of 38 Garscube runners took part in the Polaroid 10k Road Race at Helensburgh on Thursday 26th May. Both the men and the women featured in the Team Prize List. The Men’s Team of Benny McLaughlin 8th in 34:22, Lindsay Cunninghan 10th in 34:37 and Euan MacKay 22nd in 35:47 finished 3rd with a total of 40 points. The Women’s Team also finished in 3rd place. The Team Members were Heather Akers 12th in 40:07, Alison Winship 15th in 40:40 and Lesley Chapman 24th in 41:37 to give a total score of 51 points. Eight Garscube Runners travelled to the Western Isles to compete in the Stornoway Half Marathon on Saturday 28th May. The Garscube Ladies were originally awarded the Balfour Team Trophy and the First Team Plaques but these were quickly retrieved when the race organisers realised their mistake as the Garscube Ladies Team of Mairi Stanley 3rd in 1:32:33, Moira Young 5th in 1:34:04 and Maureen MacLeod 8th in 1:40:08 actually finished 2nd Team with a total of 16 points, 3 points behind Hunters Bog Trotters. Other Garscube performances were: 9th Margaret Douglas with a personal best for the distance of 1:42:43, 10th Jill O’Neil - 1:43:03, 11th Carol Martin - 1:43:13, 20th Jude Austin - 1:58:25, 63rd Craig Watson - 1:50:35.

On the same day Stevie Cullen was in action in the Scottish Masters Track & Field Championships at the Chris Anderson Stadium, Aberdeen finishing 1st in the M45 800 Metres race in 2:22.25 and 2nd in the M45 1500 Metres in 5:12.70.

Finally Alison Winship was 3rd lady to complete the Kilpatrick 6 miles and 1400 feet hill race on Wednesday 1st June in a time of 1:01:03.

Britannia Asset Management Women’s 10k Road Race

A record number of 33 Garscube Ladies turned out for the Britannia Asset Management Women’s 10k Road Race at Bellahouston Park on Sunday 15th May. Kate Chapman was first home for the Club with a personal best performance for the distance of 38 minutes 41 seconds in 25th place followed by Mairi Stanley 55th in 41:38, Lesley Chapman in 78th place with a time of 42:29 and Moira Young 79th in 42:34. BUPA Great Caledonian 10K

Four Garscube runners travelled to Edinburgh to compete in the BUPA Great Caledonian Run over 10k on Sunday 8th May. Mark McIntosh was first Garscube runner to cross the finishing line in 105th place in 39:47 and Janet McColl was first Garscube lady to complete the course in 44:19. Other Garscube times were Marco Consani - 42:37 and Elizabeth Grant - 51:25.

SCHC's Alistair McInnes Memorial 5 Miles Road Race

Three Garscube Harriers runners were in action in the Scottish Veteran Harriers Club’s Alistair McInnes Memorial 5 Miles Road Race at Coatbridge on Wednesday 4th May. Iain Cullen was 5th in the M40 category in 28:14, John Weir was 2nd M45 in 29:41 and Heather Akers was 2nd W40 in 30:53.

On the same day Davie Atkin competed in the Kaim Hill 3 Miles Race at Fairlie in Ayrshire finishing in 21st place in 38:44.

Finally in Shettleston Harriers Ladies 5k Road Race at Glasgow Green on Thursday 28th April Diane Clark finished 17th in 20:56 and Elizabeth Grant 44th in 24:01.

Cathkin Braes 4 miles hill race

Two Garscube runners turned out for the Cathkin Braes 4 miles hill race on Wednesday 20th April. Alison Winship was first lady to finish in the race in 48 minutes 16 seconds after a close contest with Elaine Calder of Strathaven Striders and Iain Mennie finished in 13th place in 45:29.

Whangie Whizz 4 miles hill race

Alison also competed in the Whangie Whizz 4 miles hill race starting from the Queen’s View near the Carbeth Inn on the following Wednesday 27th April finishing in 38:15 together with fellow Garscube runner Andrew Clark whose time was 43:39.

Stafffinders 5k

Seventeen runners from Garscube Harriers took part in the Staff-finders 5k race on Sunday 24th April at Mugdock Country Park including a large contingent of Young Athletes from the Club. John Weir was first Garscube man in 7th place in 20 minutes 2 seconds, Max Ralston turned in a great performance of 20 minutes 12 seconds, the first junior to cross the finishing line and was followed by fellow young athletes Iain and Euan McGill in 21:41 and 21:43 respectively. Carole Gilmour was first Garscube lady to finish in 22:21. Other Garscube times were: Robert Cuthbertson - 21:43, Scott Nicol - 22:23, Mark Austin - 22:51, Carol Nicol - 23:13, Emma Barlow - 23:38, Alice Smith - 24:00, Erin McGill - 24;24, Anita Neilson - 24:27, Jack Austin - 26:10, Peter Meadows - 27:03, Eilidh Gillen - 28:32 and Theresa Miln - 46:36.

Coinneach Morrison selected to represent the Western Isles

Garscube man Coinneach Morrison finished the Aberdeen Athletic Club Half Marathon on Sunday 1st May in a personal best time of 1hour 25 minutes and 48 seconds. On the strength of this performance Coinneach, who comes from Tarbert in The Isle of Harris, has been selected to represent the Western Isles at half-marathon distance in the 2005 NatWest World Island Games which are scheduled to take place in Shetland in July. Over 2,000 athletes are expected to compete in this years World Island Games which are a bi-annual event involving competition between 24 teams made up of Island groups from all over the world which include, The Faroe Islands, Falkland Islands, Greenland, Rhodes, Bermuda & The Cayman Islands. This is the first year that the Western Isles have fielded a team for the games.

Troon Tortoise Athletic Club’s 10k Road Race

Thirteen Garscube runners were in action in Troon Tortoise Athletic Club’s 10k Road Race on Wednesday 4th May. Lindsay Cunningham was first home for the Club in 20th place in 33:42 and Jill O’Neil was first Garscube lady in 42:02. Other Garscube times: John Murray - 40:44, Gerald Hartley - 41:01, Jonathan Austin - 42:21, Gillian Davidson - 43:58, Marian Kelly - 44:06, Craig Watson and Coinneach Morrison both 44:08, Jayne Barnes - 45:04, Ann Clanachan - 46:51, Dermot Williamson - 47.00 and Mark Turnbull - 47:52.

Edinburgh to North Berwick 22 Miles Road Race

Four Garscube Runners travelled east on Saturday 7th May to run in the Edinburgh to North Berwick 22 Miles Road Race. Davie Geddes was first to finish in 20th place in 2:25:22 followed by Iain Cullen in 2:29:15, Davie Atkin in 2:38:25, Carole Gilmour in 2:46 and Anita Neilson in 3:13:15.

Tour of Clydeside Series of Races

Eight members of Garscube Harriers were in action in the Tour of Clydeside Series of Race which took place in the week commencing Monday 18th April. The Series consists of a 2 mile cross country race, a 3 mile hill race, a 3 mile canal bank race, a two and a half mile trail race and a 2mile road race on the final evening. Benny McLaughlin was first Garscube Harrier in 4th place overall and 2nd Vet with an aggregate time of 1 hour 17 minutes 18 seconds. Steven Cullen was 8th Male Vet over 40 with an aggregate time of 1:31:11 a mere 28 seconds in front of Heather Akers who won the Ladies Prize. Marian Kelly finished in 28th place with an aggregate time of 1:40:23 to win the 3rd Ladies Prize. Dave Heppell was unfortunately unable to compete on the Friday after finishing the first 4 events in a total time of 1:31:54. Other Garscube runners competing in this event were John Baraclough who finished 40th in the Canal Bank Race in 19:42, Mark Turnbull 35th in the Trail Race in 21:43 and Ian Eccles 29th in the Road Race in 15:44.

Ormidale 10k

Four hardy athletes from Garscube made the trip to Arran for the Ormidale 10k on Sunday 17th April. The hosts, Arran Runners, had thoughtfully provided a portable TV at the start so all the athletes could be inspired by Paula Radcliffe's success in a very sunny London Marathon. The Arran weather was very different from London, being cold, wet and windy and most runners were slower than last year. With a field of 52, the race was won by Billy Richardson of Irvine AC. The Garscube placings were as follows: 9th - James Taylor in 41:29, 16th (and first W35) Maureen McVey in 44:21, 24th - Margaret Douglas in 46:21 and 25th - John Baraclough in 46:49.

London Marathon.

Nine Garscube runners completed the London Marathon. First home was Lindsay Cunningham in 2:51:59 while first Garscube Lady was Lesley Chapman in 3:26:12. Other Garscube performances were: Rob McLennan - 3:13:20, Jude Austin - 3:33:49, Carol Martin - 3:39:39, Robert MacFarlane - 3:41:17, Maureen O'Hara - 3:44:31, Jayne Barnes - 3:49:47 and Anne Flynn - 4:07:29.

Other races.

Davie Atkin ran well in the Neways Speyside Way 50k Race on Sunday 10th April finshing in 7th position in 3:57:53 while on the same day the Garscube Team of Stephen Mulrine, Adam McAneny and Stevie Cullen won the Senior Menís Dunbartonshire AAA 3x800 Metres Track Relay Championships at Linwood Stadium in a time of 7:23.6. Two of Garscube's Young Athletes were in action in the Open Graded 100 Metres Races held in conjunction with the Championships. Jack Austin finished 3rd in the 5th Heat in 19.2 seconds while Martin Douglas finished 4th in the same heat in 19.4 seconds.

On the previous day in the Glasgow City Council Open Graded Meeting at the Kelvin Hall Stevie Cullen finshed 2nd in his heat in the 300 metres races in 47.11 seconds and 3rd in Heat 2 of the 600 metres races in 1:43.21.

Finally Iain Cullen finished 16th in 59:41 and John Murray 78th in 1:08:37 in the Tom Scott Memorial 10 Miles Road Race at Strathclyde Park on Sunday 3rd April.

Scottish National Road Relay Championships

Nineteen members of Garscube Harriers turned out for the Scottish National Road Relay Championships which were held at Livingston on Saturday 26th March 2005. The race consists of alternate 3.1 mile and 6.2 mile stages over a mainly traffic free route. In the men’s 6 stage relay the Garscube “A” Team finished in 14th position in a total time of 2 hours 31 minutes 45 seconds. Stephen Mulrine finished 17th on the first short leg in 17:17 and Euan MacKay’s time on the second 6.2 mile stage was 32:48 in 20th place. Niall MacFarlane was fastest Garscube man on the third short stage in 17:04 recovering 8 places to 12th., followed by Iain Cullen 16th in 33:52, Rob McLennan 15th in 18:01 and Benny McLaughlin fastest Garscube runner on the 6.2 mile leg in 32:43.

The Garscube men’s “B” Team of Philip Hughson - 18:25, Davie Geddes - 36:11, Kenny Macanna - 20:17, Athole Smith - 38:08, Stevie Cullen - 20:23 and Davie Atkin - 36:02 finished 32nd in 2:49:26.

In the women’s 4 stage relay the Garscube “A” Team of Marian Kelly - 22:28, Heather Akers - 37:35, Carole Gilmour - 22:03 and Alison Winship - 38:19 finished 8th in 2:00:25. Marian had a busy day as she also turned out on the 3rd leg of the “B” Team which finished 14th in 2:11:54. The “B” Team was led out by Karen - Anne Stevenson in 25:24 followed by Jill O’Neil in 42:07, Marian in 23:15 and Diane Clark in 41:08.

Alloa Half Marathon

On Sunday 20th March four Garscube runners turned out for the swansong of the Alloa Half Marathon. Lindsay Cunningham finished 9th in 1:16:18, James Taylor was 172nd in 1:32:23, Scott Nicol was 308th in 1:39:00 and Carol Nicol was 439th in 1:43:44. 999 runners completed the race.

Clydesdale Harriers Dunky Wright

Benny McLaughlin was 2nd vet to finish the Clydesdale Harriers Dunky Wright 5K Road Race at Clydebank on Saturday 19th March in a time of 16:38. Heather Akers was first lady vet in 19:13 and Iain Cullen’s time was 19:15.

Grangemouth Round the Houses Road Races

On Sunday 13th March three Garscube men travelled to Grangemouth to compete in the Round the Houses Road Races. Stephen Mulrine finished 8th in the 5K Road Race in 16:45 while in the 10K race John Weir was 86th in 38:43 and Robert Cuthbertson finished 249th in 43:49.

Balloch to Clydebank Half Marathon.

For the third successive year Garscube Harriers won the Dunbartonshire Half Marathon Championships which were incorporated into the Balloch to Clydebank Half Marathon which was held last Sunday under clear blue skies. First Garscube man to cross the finishing line in Seaforth Road, Clydebank was Lindsay Cunningham who also won the individual prize for 4th place with a time of 1 hour 14 minutes 45 seconds. The other members of the Team were Davie Atkin 39th in 1:24:44 and Davie Geddes 48th in 1:25:59 and the Team won with 91 points from Glasgow University Hares and Hounds whose score was 130 points. Mairi Stanley who was first Garscube Lady and second female vet to finish also won the Women’s individual Dunbartonshire Half Marathon Championship in 1:32:04. Other Garscube times were: Robert MacFarlane - 1:27:31, Athole Smith - 1:28:41, John Murray - 1:29:03, Andy Leck - 1:31:48, Jude Austin - 1:33:28, Carole Gilmour - 1:36:08, Carol Martin - 1:36:34, Maureen O’Hara - 1:37:12, Jill O’Neil - 1:41:19, Jayne Barnes - 1:43:23, Gillian Davidson - 1:43:47, Anita Neilson - 1:44:07, Ann Clanachan - 1:44:47, Scott Nicol - 1:46:47, Carol Nicol - 1:47:04, Lynn Fairbairn - 1:48:14, Aileen Spiers - 1:48:22, Karen-Anne Stevenson - 1:49:41, Theresa Miln - 1:49:47, Pat O’Shea - 1:50:19, Jo Pearson - 1:50:21 and Paul Clark - 2:01:57.

On the same weekend Mary Cox ran in the Liverpool half marathon (where the sun was also shining), recording a time of 1:49:17.

Scottish National Masters Cross Country Championships.

Eight Garscube Harriers Club members were in action on Sunday 6th March in the Scottish National Masters Cross Country Championships which were held at Bellahouston Park on Sunday 6th March. Benny McLaughlin was first Garscube man to finish in the Men’s 10,000 metres race in 28th place in 34:10. Other Garscube times in the men’s race were Iain Cullen - 36:48, John Weir - 37:21, Davie Geddes - 38:53 and Stevie Cullen - 42:11. Heather Akers was 10th in the Ladies 6,400 metres championships in 26:12 followed by Lesley Chapman -- 21st in 27:21, Maureen O’Hara 26th in 28:17 and Karen-Anne Stevenson 40th in 33:15. On the same day Elizabeth Grant travelled to the east coast to compete in the Arbroath Smokies Ladies 10 miles race finishing 78th in 1:25:39.

Henderson Handicap 6 Miles Cross Country Race.

Fifteen members of Garscube Harriers completed the Henderson Handicap 6 Miles Cross Country Race over a testing but unseasonably firm course at Maryhill Park on Saturday 26th February. With a start of 19 minutes 45 seconds from scratch man Benny McLaughlin, Karen Anne Stevenson quickly built up a commanding lead and despite a spirited comeback by the fast closing Hazel Watson on the final lap of the 3 lap course managed to hold her off to win by a margin of 33 seconds in 46 Minutes 56 seconds. On Sunday 20th February Stephen Mulrine travelled south to Cardiff to compete in the British Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships, wining the M35 800metres race in 2:07:66 and on the Saturday 19th February eleven Garscube runners were in action at the National Cross Country Championships over a windswept course at Irvine. Lindsay Cunningham was the first Garscube man to complete the Senior Menís 12000 metres race finishing in 82nd place in 46:58. Other times in the menís race were: Euan Mackay - 48:16, Iain Cullen - 50:40, Davie Atkin - 54:13, Davie Geddes - 54:29, Robert MacFarlane - 57:07 and Andrew Clarke - 59:54.

Heather Akers was first Garscube lady to finish the Senior Women's 8000 metres race in 45th place in 37:07 followed by Lesley Chapman 59th in 38:30, Marian Kelly 82nd in 40:44 and Jill OíNeil 84th in 41:02.

75 year old Jim Linn celebrating his return to competition after rejoining the Club by finishing 3rd in 94.65 seconds in the M75 400 metres race in the D M Hall Scottish Masters Indoor Track Championships at the Kelvin Hall on Saturday 12th February. Unfortunately due to a painful hip Jim was unable to complete the other races he had entered ñ the 800 metres and 1500 metres. At the same meeting Stevie Cullen finished 2nd in the M45 800 metres race in 2:23.63.

Garscube Harriers Club Cross Country Championships, 2005

A total of thirty three runners were in action in Garscube Harriers Club Cross Country Championships at Colquhoun Park, Bearsden last Saturday. Lindsay Cunningham built up a commanding lead early on in the Senior Mens’ 6 mile race to score an easy victory in 40 minutes 28 seconds about 400 yards in front of 2nd placed Euan MacKay whose time was 42:06. Other times in the men’s race were: Iain Cullen - 44:13, John Weir - 45:19, Stevie Cullen - 48:49, Jonathan Austin - 50:19, Robert Cuthbertson - 50:37, Athole Smith - 52:35 and Stuart Irvine - 58:28. Alison Winship was the winner of the Senior Women’s 4 miles Championship in 31:37 and Adam McAneny was the unchallenged Youth Champion over the same distance in 30:33. Marion Kelly was the winner of the sealed handicap with a time of 33:03 and a handicap of 8:15 to produce a net time of 24:48. Other times in the Senior Women’s race were: Lesley Chapman - 32:28, Maureen O’Hara - 33:04, Jill O’Neil - 33:16, Carol Martin - 34:13, Margaret Douglas - 35:14 and Karen Anne Stevenson - 42:01. In the Young Athletes 1 miles race there were 15 runners including two boys living locally who just turned up and asked if they could run. Iain McGill also scored an emphatic victory having left the rest of the field behind at a fairly early stage in the race to finish in 9 minutes 47 seconds exactly 1 minute and 14 seconds in front of Marc Austin. Emma Barlow was first girl to finish in 11:25 just over a minute in front of Erin McGill whose time was 12:29. Other times in the Young Athletes race were: James Ross - 11:04, Max Ralston - 11:55, Andrew Smith - 12:02, Grant - 12:41, Jack Austin - 13:09, Martin - 13:15, Victoria Stevenson - 13:54, Donald - 14:18, David - 14:55, Lewis Stevenson - 15:33 and Greg - 17:54.

Marc Austin ran well to finish 3rd in a time of 4:07 in the Glasgow Development Primary Boys Cross Country Championships on Sunday 30th January at Bellahouston Park.

Garscube lady Linda Topping was 2nd in 28:04 in the Women’s 3 Miles Race at the Scottish Civil Service Cross Country Championships at Stirling University on Wednesday 26th January.

Stephen Mulrine was 5th in the Senior Men’s 1,500 Metres Race in 4:27.72 at the DM Hall West District Indoor Track Championships at the Kelvin Hall on Saturday 15th January.

Jack Crawford Memorial Springburn Cup, Jan 2005

Eighteen Members of Garscube Harriers were in action in the Jack Crawford Memorial Springburn Cup 10,000 Metres Canal Bank Race at Bishopbriggs on Saturday 15th January. Lindsay Cunningham once again showed his clubmates a clean pair of heels finishing more than 5 minutes in front of the next Garscube runner in 34:55 and winning the prize for 6th senior man to complete the race. The Garscube Ladies improved on the previous week’s performance taking home the first team prize with a total of 30 points. The members of the victorious Team were Heather Akers 5th in 40:37, Maureen O’Hara 10th in 44:55 and Marian Kelly 15th in 46:14. Heather also won the prize for 2nd Lady Vet. Nigel Barge 5 Miles Memorial Road Race, Jan 2005

Nineteen Garscube Harriers runners turned out for the first event on the Club’s Fixture List for 2005, the Nigel Barge 5 Miles Memorial Road Race which started from the Garscube Estate on Saturday 8th January. The Ladies Team of Alison Winship 9th in 33:26, Lesley Chapman 11th in 33:53 and Marian Kelly 25th in 38:51 won the 2nd Ladies Team Prize with a total of 45 points. Lesley also won the prize for First Lady Vet over 45 to complete the race. Lindsay Cunningham was first Garscube man home in 12th place in 28:03. James Taylor got his 2005 competition programme off to an early start as Garscube Harriers sole representative in the Lenzie “Jog” on Monday 3rd January setting a fast pace in the 5 miles road race to finish in 14th position in 33 minutes 56 seconds.
