Tour of Clydeside Series of Races Five members of Garscube Harriers completed the Tour of Clydeside Series of Races which was held each evening during the week commencing Monday 8th May. The series consisted of a 2.5 miles trail race, a 3 mile canal bank race, a 2 mile road race, a 3k time trial and a 2 mile cross country race on the final evening. The prize for First Veteran over 40 was won by Benny McLaughlin (who was also 2nd overall) in a total time of 1 hour 1 minute and 58 seconds and Dermot Williamson won the prize for 2nd Vet over 50 in 1:16:14. Other Garscube men to complete the series were Stevie Cullen - 1:11:10, Paul Goddard - 1:15:22 and Dave Heppell - 1:23:55. In addition four Garscube runners competed in the Canal Bank Race on the Tuesday. Ian Eccles was 7th in 15:27, John Murray 24th in 17:12, Jill ONeil 5th lady in 17:57 and Mike Scott 40th in 25:08. Ian also completed the 2 mile road race in 10:57, the time trial in 10:03 and the cross country race in 11:48 while Mike finished the time trial in 15:51. Marian Kelly was third lady to complete the last race in the series, the 2 miles cross country race in 13:43. Alison Winship was 2nd lady in a time of 41:47 to finish the Johnnie Walker Kilmarnock 10k Road Race which started from St Josephs Academy, Kilmarnock on Wednesday 10th May and Kathryn Ellis was also 2nd in 1:42:46 in the Road to the Isles Half Marathon at Mallaig on Saturday 29th April. Douglas Academy PTA 5k James Taylor won the men's race in the Douglas Academy PTA 5k at Mugdock on Sunday 7th May. Euan Mcgill was first Garscube boy to finish and his sister Erin was second girl by a hair's length! Declan Neilson finished in 29:10 and Anita Neilson in 29:14 (other times not available). Troon Tortoises 10k Road Race Eight Garscube Members were in action in Troon Tortoises 10k Road Race on Wednesday 3rd May. First Garscube man to finish was John Murray in 39:51 while first Garscube lady was Alison Winship in 40:14. Other Garscube times were: Alan McNeill - 41:11, Gerald Hartley - 42:03, Jill ONeil - 42:07, Marian Kelly - 43:29, Jonathan Austin - 43:35 and Ann Clanachan - 49:48 Monklands Half Marathon Five Garscube runners took part in the Monklands Half Marathon on Sunday 30th April and two finished with personal bests Marco Consani who was 5th in 1:22:03 and Margaret Douglas who was 4th lady to cross the finishing line in 1:40:06. Other times were: Athole Smith 1:29:36, John Murray 1:33:29 and Maureen MacLeod 1:41:14. Finally on Saturday 13th May Alison Winship was second lady to complete the Trossachs 10,000 metres trail race at Aberfoyle on Saturday 13th May in 42:27 and Stuart Irvine was timed at 15:52 in Bellahouston Harriers Midweek Challenge 2 mile race at Pollok Park on Monday 24th April. Edinburgh Forthside Half Marathon Six Garscube Harriers runners completed the inaugural Edinburgh Forthside Half Marathon which started and finished at the Ocean Terminal, Leith on Sunday 26th March. The organisers appeared to have been overwhelmed by the large number of over 3000 runners who entered the race. There was a fifteen minute delay to the start, some of the runners had to queue for a lengthy period at the finish for their positions and times to be recorded and the full results have only recently become available. Alison McCarn was first Garscube runner to finish the race in 1 hour 45 minutes 38 seconds with Anne Marie Cullen second Garscube lady home in 1 hour 47 minutes 11 seconds hotly pursued by Theresa Miln who finished 4 seconds later. The other Garscube runners were Raymond Bryans timed at 1:53:50, Sara Montgomery 2:07:55 and Charlie Kilshaw 2:37:23. On the same day Elizabeth Grant finished in 25th place in 30:05 in the St Andrews Hospice Ladies 6k Road Race at Strathclyde Park. Girona 10k Road Race Three Garscube runners travelled to Girona in Spain to complete in the Girona 10k Road Race on Sunday 2nd April. It was a particularly warm day for the time of year with the temperature reaching almost 80ºF. Benny McLaughlin was first from the Club to complete the flat course which included quite a few bends and a kilometre of cobbled streets in 47th place in 36:43. Jill ONeil was 11th lady to finish in 42:44 and Marian Kelly overcame knee problems to finish 13th lady in 45:03. Tom Scott Road Races Five Garscube men competed in the Tom Scott Road Races at Strathclyde Park, Motherwell on Sunday 9th April. Iain Cullen was first home in the 10 Miles Memorial Road Race in 21st place overall in 59:04 followed by Club President Davie Geddes 37th in 1:02:19, Jim McAneny 55th in 1:06:04 and John Murray 77th in 1:09:07. Stuart Irvine was the sole Garscube runner in the inaugural 4 Miles Road Race round Strathclyde Loch finishing 28th in 34:46. Barrhead Gala 5k Road Race Garscube runners featured prominently in the results of the Barrhead Gala 5k Road Race on Sunday 16th April. Kate Chapman was first lady to finish in 18:44, Alison Winship was 3rd lady in 19:53, Lindsay Cunningham was 9th overall in 17:01 and James Taylor 46th in 20:35. On the following day, Monday 17th April David Geddes completed the Boston Marathon in 3:08:57. Alison Winship was 3rd lady to finish the Cathkin Braes Hill Race on Wednesday 19th April in a time of 47:13. Lindsay Cunningham finished 9th in this race in 39:10. Garscube runners were in action in various venues on Sunday 23rd April. Jim Dingwall Memorial Round the Houses 10k Five competed in the Jim Dingwall Memorial Round the Houses 10k Road Race at Grangemouth. Ian Eccles was first Garscube man home in 44th place in 35:55 while Alison Winship was first Garscube lady in 40:48. Other Garscube times were: Marco Consani - 36:52, Philip Hughson - 37:25 and James Taylor 42:30. Jill ONeil was the ladies winner of the Ormidale 10k Road Race in Brodick, Isle of Arran in 41:44 and Benny McLaughlin was 3rd and first vet in 35:08. Karen McIlvenna completed the Lochaber Marathon in 3 hours 42 minutes but unfortunately Robert Cuthbertson had to pull out after 20 miles due to injury. London Marathon. Finally a squad of seven Garscube runners competed in the London Marathon. Carole Gilmours months of intensive training paid off and she was first Garscube runner to finish in 3:16:58. The times of the other Garscube runners were: Jude Austin - 3:25:19, Lesley Chapman - 3:27:10, Carol Martin - 3:28:57, Scott Nicol - 3:32:06, Debbie Martin - 3:50:51 and Rachel Stevenson - 4:16:08. Henderson Cup 7 miles handicap cross country race Eight Garscube Harriers Club members completed the final Cross Country event of the Winter 2005/06 Season, the Henderson Cup 7 miles handicap race which was held on Saturday 25th March at Braidfield Farm, Clydebank. Club President Davie Geddes was a comfortable winner of the Handicap off a start of 5 minutes 30 seconds finishing more than 2 minutes ahead of Marian Kelly in 48 minutes 27 seconds. Benny McLaughlin off 1 minute recorded the fastest time of the day of 46 minutes 56 seconds. Other times were: Athole Smith - 53:10, Jim McAneny - 54:20, Marian Kelly - 55:44, Dermot Williamson - 59:13 and Karen-Anne Stevenson - 1:10:40. Cross Country League Shield The Henderson Cup also concluded the Garscube Harriers Cross Country League programme for 2005/06. Marian Kelly was the winner of the Cross Country League Shield and 1st prize with a total of 60 points. Other prizewinners were Dermot Williamson in 2nd place with 52 points and Davie Geddes 3rd with 42 points. Young Athletes 1400 metre Cross Country A race for Young Athletes was held over a 1400 metre course after the Senior Race. The race was over two laps for the Under 13 runners with the Under 11s being given the option of running one or two laps. Aimee Clark was first to finish the 1 lap race in 6:29 followed by Matt Niven in 7:06 and Innes Ross in 9:35. Twelve runners completed the two lap race which was won by Marc Austin who held off a fast finishing Archie Prince to finish in 12:00 to Archies 12:03. Other times in the two lap race were: James Ross - 12:26, Sean Corrigan - 12:38, Erin McGill - 12:39, Craig Young - 12:51, Sophie Jones -13:43, Andrew Smith - 13:50, Drew Niven - 14:31, Keith Robertson - 14:43, Ritchie Austin - 16:21 and Lewis Stevenson - 18:45. Clydesdale Harriers 5K Open Road Race Five Garscube men competed in Clydesdale Harriers 5K Open Road Race at Clydebank on Saturday 18th March. Greg Hastie was first to finish in 9th place in 15:56 followed by Lindsay Cunningham 15th in 16:27 and Iain Cullen 32nd in 17:24. Other Garscube times were John Murray - 19:38 and Andy Griffiths - 20:08. National Young Athletes Road Race Championships Finally on the following day four Garscube Young Athletes were in action in the National Young Athletes Road Race Championships at Falkirk. In the Under 13 Boys race in a very close finish Archie Prince finished in 44th place in 9:40 with James Ross in 45th place being given the same time while in the Under 13 Girls race Erin McGill was 23rd in 9:57 while Holly Conyers in 34th place was timed at 10:11. Inverness Half Marathon Six Garscube Ladies travelled north to compete in the Inverness Half Marathon which was held on Sunday 12th March. The runners stayed overnight on the previous Saturday in Aviemore and due to the adverse road conditions it was doubtful for a while it they would ever make it to Inverness with the A9 closed by heavy snowfall between Aviemore and Inverness but fortunately the road was cleared half an hour before they were due to travel and the ladies arrived in Inverness to find it virtually free of snow but bitterly cold. It proved a worthwhile visit to the Highland Capital as the Garscube Team of Alison Winship timed at 1 hour 27 minutes 16 seconds, Marie Stanley - 1:29:16 and Moira Young - 1:34:38 won the First Ladies Team Prize of a £60 voucher to spend at Run and Become for each runner. Alison was 2nd Female Senior runner to finish the race and Mairi was 3rd Female Vet over 35. Alison, Mairi and Margaret Douglas who was 10th Female Vet over 40 in 1:40:38 also achieved personal best performances over the half marathon distance in this race. The rest of the Garscube contingent were Carol Martin 5th Female Vet over 35 in 1:37:26 and Maureen MacLeod 5th Female Vet over 40 in 1:38:13. On the previous Sunday - 5th March - Elizabeth Grant competed in the Arbroath Footers Smokies 10 mile Ladies Only Road Race finishing in 89th place in 1:25:58. Finally two Garscube runners were in action in Kirkintilloch Olympians 12.5k Road Race on Sunday 26th February. This race was reinstated by Kirkintilloch Olympians as part of their silver jubilee celebrations after an absence from the racing calendar of several years. Heather McIntosh who finished in 57:16 won the prize for 3rd lady vet over 35 while Stuart Irvine was timed at 66:11. Scottish National Cross Country Championships There was a very good turnout of twenty two members of Garscube Harriers for the Scottish National Cross Country Championships which were held at Callendar Park, Falkirk on Saturday 18th February. Four Young Athletes had a taste of competition at National level for the first time. In a very close finish between the two boys, James Ross was 76th in the Under 13 Boys 3200 Metres Championship in 14 minutes 41 seconds and Archie Prince was 77th in 14:44. Holly Conyers was the only Garscube runner in the Under 13 Girls Race over the same distance finishing 71st in 16:16 and Iain McGill was 60th in the Under 15 Boys 4000 Metres Race in 15:34. Carole Gilmour was first Garscube Lady to cross the finishing line in the Senior Womens 8000 Metres Championship in 43rd place in 33:34 followed by Alison Winship 51st in 33:54 and Mairi Stanley 53rd in 33:59. Other Garscube times in this race were: Lesley Chapman - 35:11, Marian Kelly - 35:40, Jill ONeil - 35:49, Maureen OHara - 37:06, Kathryn Ellis - 39:17, and Karen-Anne Stevenson - 43:54. In the Senior Mens 12000 Metres Race Greg Hastie was first Garscube man to finish in 46th position in 43:19 exactly 40 seconds in front of Lindsay Cunningham who finished in 61st place. The times of the other Garscube men in this race were: Davie Geddes - 50:17, Davie Atkin - 52:07, Kenny Macanna - 52:39, Athole Smith - 53:51, Andy Griffiths - 54:17, James Taylor - 55:21 and Dermot Williamson - 58:48. Finally on the same day Stephen Mulrine was 4th in the M35 800 Metres in 2:09.74 at the D M Hall National Indoor Masters Championships at the Kevin Hall and Stevie Cullen was 5th in the M45 800 Metres in 2:31:30. Garscube Harriers Cross Country Championship Greg Hastie was a clear winner of the Garscube Harriers Senior Mens Cross Country Championship over a 6.5 miles course at Colquhoun Park, Bearsden on Saturday 11th February. After a close fought battle with Lindsay Cunningham over the first two laps of the three lap course Greg pulled steadily away in the final lap to win by 20 seconds from Lindsay in 38 minutes 49 seconds. Benny McLaughlin finished in an isolated 3rd place in 43:04 while, after being closely shadowed by John Weir in the first lap, Club President Davie Geddes pulled steadily away over the penultimate and final laps to finish 4th in 44:17 with John finishing 5th in 45:06. Alison Winship scored a convincing victory in 30 minutes 32 seconds in the Senior Womens 4.5 Miles Championships held over the first two laps of the Mens Course completing the race 59 seconds in front of Jenny Greaves with Kathryn Ellis 3rd in 32:47. Other positions and times were: Men: 6th Kenny Macanna - 45:48, 7th Peter McGlynn - 47:05, 8th James Taylor - 47:24, 9th John Dryden - 48:46, 10th Dermot Williamson - 49:13. Women: 4th Jill ONeil - 34:30, 5th Roisin Lynch - 35:23, 6th Karen Anne Stevenson - 39:28 Karen Anne won the sealed handicap off 15:55. The Young Athletes 1,250 Metres Championships held prior to the Senior Race was won in a fast finish by James Ross who held off a strong challenge by Archie Prince to finish in 5 minutes 28 seconds, five seconds in front of Archie. Other results of the Young Athletes race were: 3rd Cameron Barr - 5:53, 4th Jack Austin - 5:59, 5th Martin Douglas - 6:10, 6th Ben Steven - 6:24, 7th Ritchie Austin - 6:35, 8th Adam Martin - 6:37, 9th Rory Stevenson - 7:04, 10th Luke (Guest) - 7:34, 11th Antony Cohn - 8:13, 12th Innes Ross - 8:33, 13th Martin Cohn - 10:57, 14th Greg Martin - 11:04. Renfrewshire AAA 5 Miles Road Race Four Garscube Harriers Members turned out for the Renfrewshire AAA 5 Miles Road Race which started from the Battery Park, Greenock on Saturday 4th February. Alison Winship was first Garscube lady to finish in 7th place in 32:43 followed by Marion Kelly 13th in 34:08 and Alison McCarn 15th in 35:54. Stuart Irvine was the sole Garscube competitor in the mens race finishing 92nd in 39:06. On the same day, with the fine weather even bringing out some spectators!, Lindsay Cunningham, competing as a guest, finish 2nd in 33:54 in Clydesdale Harriers 5 Miles Cross Country Championships which were held at Carleith Farm, Old Kilpatrick. Buchlyvie 10k Race Greg Hastie won the inaugural Buchlyvie 10k Race on 28th January which was run on an out and back course mostly on a forest path through Flanders Moss. On the return journey Greg pulled clear of the chasing pack which included fellow club member Lindsay Cunningham to finish in 33:42. Lindsay was 5th in 35:00. Lesley Chapman was 4th Lady Vet to finish in 41:46 followed by Jenny Greaves 6th Vet in 43:25 and Karen McIlvenna 8th Vet in 44:35. Other Garscube competitors were Robert Cuthbertson - 43:07, Kathryn Ellis - 44:07, Stuart Irvine - 51:35 and Rachel Stevenson - 51:49. Three Garscube girls competed in the East Dunbartonshire Schools Cross Country Championships on Saturday 21st January. Erin McGill won the Primary 5 and Primary 6 Girls event in a time of 7:27 and in the Primary 7 girls race, Alice Smith was 5th in 7:29 and Eilidh Gillen was 20th in 8:32. Jack Crawford Springburn Cup 10k Race Fifteen members of Garscube Harriers were in action in the Jack Crawford Springburn Cup 10k Race along the Forth and Clyde Canal Towpath on Saturday 14th January. Kate Chapman won the prize for second lady to finish the race in 55th place overall in a time of 38 minutes 8 seconds and the Garscube Ladies team of Kate, Lesley Chapman 122nd in 42:05 and Marian Kelly 151st in 43:19 were 2nd Ladies Team with a total of 328 points. Lindsay Cunningham was first Garscube man to cross the finishing line outside Bishopbriggs Leisuredrome in 11th position in 34:05 while Ian Eccles set another personal best at the distance finishing 24th in 36:08. Other Garscube times were - Marco Consani - 37:45, Davie Atkin - 38:51, John Weir - 39:07, Athole Smith - 39:15, Robert Cuthbertson - 42:47, Jon Austin - 43:04, Karen McIlvenna - 46:10, Stuart Irvine - 50:47, Karen-Anne Stevenson - 52:36 and Rachel Stevenson - 52:53. Three Garscube Harriers Young Athletes competed in the Tesco Junior Great Winter 2k Run at Holyrood Park, Edinburgh on the same day. Marc Austin finished in 8th position in 9:24 while his brothers Jack and Ritchie were 19th in 10:13 and 88th in 12:22 respectively. Marc and Jack both came first for their respective age categories and Ritchie was 3rd boy. Nigel Barge Memorial Road Race Eighteen members of Garscube Harriers turned out for the Nigel Barge Memorial Road Race at Maryhill on Saturday 7th January. The course was changed at the last minute on police advice to a two lap course through the Garscube Estate and the distance increased to 5.8 miles from the traditional 5 miles due to repairs to a bridge over a railway line at Dalsholm Road. Stephen Mulrine was the first Garscube man to finish in 23rd place in 33 minutes 59 seconds and Lesley Chapman was first Garscube lady and 2nd Lady Vet over 50 in the race in 40:15. Other Garscube times were: Ian Eccles - 34:15, Marco Consani - 36:31, Davie Atkin - 37:24, Athole Smith - 37:36, Paul Consani - 38:03, Peter McGlynn - 39:07, Stevie Cullen - 39:46, Marian Kelly - 40:46, Dermot Williamson - 42:57, Jon Austin - 43:41, Jill ONeil - 43:53, Ray Bryans - 47:40, Stuart Irvine - 47:45, Gordon Hamilton - 47:58, Paul Clark - 48:52 and Mark Turnbull - 49:27. Jack Shirley Memorial Hogmanay Handicap 4.2 Miles Road Race Nineteen Garscube runners were in action in icy and foggy conditions in the first Club race of the year the Jack Shirley Memorial Hogmanay Handicap 4.2 Miles Road Race at Burnbrae, Milngavie on Monday 2nd January. Gordon Hamilton was a clear winner of the race in 34:48 off a handicap of 18 minutes finishing more than 7 minutes ahead of Robert Cuthbertson whose time was 29:40 off 6 minutes. Scratch man Stephen Mulrine recorded the fastest time of 24:20. Other times were: Athole Smith 27:26, Stevie Cullen 28:19, Marc Austin 30:49, Benny McLaughlin & Lesley Chapman 30:50, Maureen MacLeod 32:25, Jill ONeil 32:26, Maureen OHara & Karen McIlvenna 32:54, Stuart Irvine 36:05, Jonathan Austin & Carol Martin 36:43, Jack Austin 38:15, Martin Douglas 38:16, Margaret Douglas 38:26 and Charlie Kilshaw 44:14. |
