Evangeline

by R I McNabb

3 barre chords - what could be simpler? Just get that rhythm sorted out and you're there. Easy-peasy.

INTRO | VERSE 1 | CHORUS | VERSE 2 | CHORUS | MIDDLE 8 | VERSE 3 | CHORUS | OUTRO

Key

X = mute (or no chord depending on context)

- = hold chord played for duration of beat

/ = play chord again

INTRO

The next 2 bars are shown split down into 16ths, so you can see exactly which beat the chord is played on. (Hellfire, just listen to the song and it'll make sense: honest!) Each beat of the bar is shown in bold.

4|1 2 3 4|2 2 3 4|3 2 3 4|4 2 3 4

B / - - - - - - E / / / A - / X B

VERSE

No guitar over first 8 bars

Again, the next two bars are shown each to a single line, split into 16ths. Repeat four times.

1 2 3 4|2 2 3 4|3 2 3 4|4 2 3 4

X       B - - / / / / - - - - X

1 2 3 4|2 2 3 4|3 2 3 4|4 2 3 4

E - / - X   A - - - - - - - - -

CHORUS

As per verse (miss out first 8 empty bars)

MIDDLE 8

OUTRO

Playing Notes

The intro here does not include the repeated synth melody (4 bars).

The first chord in each intro bar is preceded by an initial "syncopated" chord. For example, counting "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &" for each bar, play the first chord on the fourth "and". The verse rhythm is shown more precisely.

On the album version, it sounds as if the chords are played in a high register (bar chords on 5th and 7th frets). The live version on "North West Coast" sounds more like 5th chords played in lower registers (B5 on second fret, E5 and A5 open). In the live version, the main riff is repeated throughout each verse and chorus.

VERSE 1

It was some time after midnight, I was looking for a friend

My headlights lit her body by some pinetrees on a bend

I slowed down right beside her, I turned the music down

She looked around then climbed inside, She didn't make a sound

CHORUS

Evangeline

VERSE 2

Well soon we started talking, I asked her for her name

She said "It's not important, but I'll tell you anyway

My Mother loved the bayou, my Daddy worked the land

They named me after what they loved so the world could understand"

VERSE 3

I stopped just by the crossroad, she thanked me once again

The forest evening chorus was the only sound I heard

Now if you ever see her, be sure to say "Hello"

Her level thumb may stop you if you're West-bound and alone
