A Chide's Alphabet Issue 3
HARRIET ZINNES
Beginning Again
And the next and the next
Silence
The embattlement of word on word
notwithstanding the intervals
The quiet time from pause to pause
from loud to soft
from the far end of being
and the penitential eros
It was like that in the morning
before the sun came out
even before the dog entered the bedroom
with his begging eyes
You were asleep
and I awake certainly wasn’t getting up
Coffee would come later
In the meantime you stirred
and we began again
Near the Garden Wall
Prior to
and it is savoury
The lawn is green
even as the stars hide in the sky
and the dog wanders behind the steel doors
of the closed garage.
It is a balmy afternoon
and after all
when the door is closed
and the chairs are set out
near the garden wall
all is fortuitous
The lion roars in the sultry cage
And the beasts are in control..
