Electric Chamber Music
Intimate music that expands features of Classical and Rock Music to create a new integrated vocabulary

David Cross and Andrew Keeling  CLOUD-SURFING
  Thursday 23 April TMG65 6.30pm – 9pm
Former King Crimson violinist David Cross and composer/flautist Andrew Keeling met in London in 2007 to discuss a musical collaboration.
The outgrowth of this was a series of improvisations (recorded in Dec. 2007 and Feb. 2008)
which form the basis of their forthcoming album, English Sun.
With musical experiences in progressive rock and contemporary classical music, Cross and Keeling’s approach to free improvisation stands outside the jazz tradition.
But, just how ‘free’ or formulaic is improvisation? Although improvisers are often reluctant to discuss the process,
Cross and Keeling have found that each session brings about a development of language.
Playing ‘live’ is likely to further transform their music, making the audience a crucial factor in this development: ‘
…(This) can affect the creation of that which is being witnessed.’ (Derek Bailey – Da Capo Press)

Andrew and I met up again and recorded 4 new pieces. We seem to have moved on somehow and these pieces are quite different in many ways from the last session. ‘Shiny Head’ and ‘High Scree’ are violin and flute duets, ‘Lamentoso’ is a piece for piano and violin and the fourth piece ‘Dido’ features flute and violin over a loop of pizzicato ‘cello and organ.
I always enjoy the chat with Andrew as well as the music ; we’re very different people but seem to communicate easily. It was interesting that we independently came up with exactly the same plan for developing our music in the context of Electric Chamber Music.(Feb.2008)

I had a great session with Andrew Keeling and recorded music based on haikus by Pete Sinfield (December 2007).

David and Yumi Hara Cawkwell , they launched this project in June 2007 which explores a number of contradictions and what seem like striking polarities: ancient/modern; east/west; male/female; sensuous/cerebral; emotional/intellectual. Their adventurous but accessible debut performance utilising real-time loops, found sound (cicadas, water and temple bells) and the church organ at the Union Chapel, London, was described as ‘Moving and very beautiful, original and a breath of very fresh air (Tony Lowe)’.
Their music cuts across the boundaries of tonal and atonal music, acoustic and electroacoustic, progressive rock, contemporary classical, and even world –all integrated by what they have in common: the highest standard of musicianship, and understandings of the importance of attitude and state of mind in music making.

David and Andrew Booker (the drummer with Peter Banks' Band) got together and recorded some music on Friday 13th October2006 - it was a concentrated session based on some musical ideas from Andrew. Listen to the sample on myspace site.

UNBOUNDED is an extraordinary collaboration between David and the Japanese pianist and singer Naomi Maki.

The artists share an exceptional musical affinity and fluidity in that dangerous area between rock and art music.

This is the first release in the new Electric Chamber Music series from Noisy Records.
