David is the founder and senior instructor of Gourock Karate Club. Having taken up the art of Shotokan Karate in February 1980 he gained his 1st Dan in February 1983, and was invited to teach Karate at Edinburgh University which he did for 2 years. Along with his friend and fellow black belt, Ian Pow, he opened Gourock Karate Club in August 1984. Ian left the area just 2 years later due to work commitments and David has run the club himself ever since. In April 1989 David gained his 2nd Dan under Sensei Enoeda, 8th Dan. Due to his success in the Scottish Championships he was also chosen to represent Scotland at the prestigious Nakayama Cup in Paris, France. The Nakayama Cup is a European Championship in which only the top two male and female competitors from each country are invited to take part. David gained 5th equal place in the Kata event narrowly missing the medal positions.

In April 1992 in Birmingham he was successful in gaining his 3rd Dan under Sensei Enoeda, 8th Dan and Sensei Sherry, 7th Dan. A short time later David decided to give more time to his Karate and turned professional. In 1994 at the Scottish Championships in Clydebank David became Scottish Kata Champion after being runner-up for the previous 3 years, and later that year was asked to be the Kata Coach for the Scottish Region, a position which he enjoyed and continued for the next 2 years. David has represented his country both at home and abroad in national and international competition as part of the Scottish Squad as have several members of his clubs over the years. He is also a qualified referee!
