KAIKOURA COAST TRACK

This is a private track in North Canterbury taking you across farmland and over hills to a remote part of the east coast and returning a different way to your starting point at The Staging Post about 50kms south of Kaikoura. The cost per person was about 120NZ$ (can't remember exactly) and included pack transport. The acccommodation available was excellent and there was also the option of getting meals provided. You stay the first night at The Staging Post where we had an excellent evening chatting to JD MacFarlane(known as JD and what a character) the 82 yr old owner who's family have farmed this area since the 1860's. There was a group of 4 Kiwi's also starting the walk the same day as us and were great company. The track is well marked throughout, you also get a map, and there are shelters at suitable points. This walk was an pleasant change to the 'normal' tramps.

DAY 1...to Ngaroma

Getting ready for the off at the Staging Post

Heading towards the hills

A beautiful sunny day, too hot at times. We had some shade early on but not after getting to the tops. Some steady climbing on a good track (follow the 'W' signs) to a saddle. Lots of evidence around of wild pigs. We spoke to a farmer who said he shoots on average about 1 a day. After a short descent and ascent we came to a good shelter for lunch - great views around here. Then it was mainly descent towards the coast and the Ngaroma farmstead and our hosts Heather & Bruce - about 17kms done today. A lemon drink awaiting us and also a swimming pool available.

DAY 2...to Medina

1,000yr old tree stumps in the sand

Resting seal

A welcome cup of tea at the shelter

A cloudier day, a pity as this section along the coastline is very impressive. Called off at the farm's Woolsheds to see the shearers in action (they certainly earn their money - what hard work that is) before getting down to the beach. You then just walk south in a straight line on black sand between the sea and the cliffs. The cliffs become progressively higher. Seals in the sea and also on the beach. Where the track turns away from the beach there is an excellent shelter with everything provided to enable you to light a fire and brew some tea. We had a leisurely lunch stop before heading up to the top of the cliffs for good views north and south and then across the fields and a lovely forested gorge (this area has been fenced off for 18yrs to try and regenerate it). With some success, we heard lots of birdsong. Excellent accommodation in a the quaint Garden Cottage and with a bath!

DAY 3...back to the Staging Post

View from near Mt Wilson

After a cloudy start a lovely sunny day with sharp views. Mainly gentle climbing away from Medina, one or two steep bits, to the highest point of Mt Wilson at 642metres. The views back to the coast clearly show the raised beach platform of the farmland. Heard a wild pig but didn't find it. A nice shelter for our elevenses stop. Got back to JD's place for early afternoon to a welcome pot of tea, a shower and a final chat to JD before departing.
