An unusual sight you will see when strolling round Montereau is the amazingly realistic painted trompe l’oeil walls. Among these, the facade of the Musée de la Faience is very impressive.
If you climb up to the heights of Montereau, you will arrive at the Surville belvedere. From this promontory, which dominates the Seine and Yonne valleys, you will enjoy a magnificent view over the town and its surrounding area.
Situated on the hillside, in a verdant setting, the Prieuré Saint-Martin, founded in 908, probably on the initiative of the Count of Champagne, is one of the most remarkable monuments in the region. Its church has retained its proportions from the year 1000 and the raised chancel was not altered in the Gothic era; only the nave was slightly modified in the 12'" and 15'" centuries.
