Don't forget to send in your photographs and a bit about cars you have owned from years gone by.
Father's Reliant
I was about ten when my father purchased this Reliant and it's the first car I drove. My father used to let me drive it on the sands, which was great fun, and in and out of the garage. My father bought this car because he only had a motor bike license, and in those days you were allowed to drive a three wheeler providing you had the reverse gear disconnected. When ever my father needed to go backwards we had to get out and push! I hated the back seat; it consisted of a piece of foam about one inch thick. Also when my father set off fast (okay I take that back). When my father lurched forward I'd crack my head on the bit that jutted out at the top of the back window. The car cornered like a motor boat with acceleration to match and was made of plastic so therefore a fire hazarded - apart from that, it wasn't a bad bucket! If anyone is wondering, the just visible hand in the back window is mine.
Father's Morris
My father finally passed the driving test and shortly after he came home in the Morris. This was a big improvement on the Reliant - I mean, it had four wheels! And it was constructed of iorn! We had the car for years and the only major job done on it was a new clutch. When I was seventeen my mother and father give me a few driving lessons in it; and I remember it being a decent little motor to drive.
My First Car
I bought this Mk1 Cortena shortly after passing my driving test and it was much faster then my father's Morris, with it's 1500cc engine and light body. My sister bought me the spot lights for chauffeuring her around. I didn't have the car long, because one day I.........
took a bend a bit to quick and you can see the result. My sister was non too pleased as I'd busted the spots!
The Bubble
I've no idea why a bought this car; unless it was something to do with being brought up with the Reliant. (The three wheel connection!) The car had a 250cc motor bike engine and was very noisy and vibrated like those silly dieting machines woman strap themselves to. One day the exhaust fell off and I couldn't get one anywhere, so I ended up fitting one that was meant for a Mini.
Triumph Vitess
I know it doesn't look much from the photograph, but the Triumph was one of my favourite cars from my passed. She had a 2 litre engine with twin carburetors and the gearbox had an overdrive. She made all the right noises and in the summer with the top down - well what can I say.
Morris Marina
This Morris Marina was the wife's car. I was driving a Capri automatic at the time and whenever I drove the Marina I'd forget to change gear and receive a sharp dig, to remind me, from my better half!
Triumph Dolomite
I bought this car, for next to nothing, with the intention of doing it up, and getting it an MOT, and then selling it on - which I did. I think I made a small loss of around £20!, so I didn't try that one again.
Volvo 240
This little love was a real iorn horse. Indestructible and unstoppable she went on, year after year without complaining and sailing through the MOTs. It was only after my divorce, when I was forced to leave her behind - that I heard she had died. (Probably of a broken heart.)
Hillman Hunter
I bought the old Hillman Hunter for £100 with twelve months MOT, and ran it for twelve months - then sold it for £30, so can't complain.
Ford Fiesta
As you can see, this little old dear needed a stick to get about, but it served me well for three years until the timing chain jumped a cog.
Austin Metro
I found the Metro's suspension a little hard, but the 1300cc engine was lively enough and the car handled well.
Scoda
This is my latest mode of transport, a Scoda. I never thought I'd be driving a Scoda - but you don't shoot a gift horse in the head. My sister gave me this car, so you see, she has forgiven me for busting the spots on the Cortena!, I've had the car twelve months so far and she's run very well in that time; starting first time every time and doing around thirty five to the gallon - not to mention her good looks!
