& OUTDOOR WORKS

After visiting this private working woodland (near Lewes, East Sussex) I had an idea to create an exhibition there. It had a fascinating atmosphere with many characterful knarled trees and tangled roots.
I approached the owners, who were very receptive to my ideas.
I curated a group exhibition with four other artists, asking them to make new works in response to the woodland. My three works were made after reading
the poem Goblin Market by Christina Rosetti and photographing the woodland at different times of the day. I used
clay dug from the lakeside at Knowlands. Many thanks to Mr & Mrs Lear for lending us their woods for the show.

Goblin Market, Procession
This artwork was made to wrap around a tree. The sections look inflatable and appear soft to the touch, in contrast to the sharp glazed spikes. The work was very popular with the muntjac deer who live in the wood.
Paperclay earthenware ring in 9 sections with bronze glazed inserts, entire work approx 1m wide.

SALISBURY HOSPITAL COMMISSION

Salisbury Manor Park Hospital Tile Installation
Commission for NHS Wiltshire for Manor Park Hospital, Salisbury. Permanent installation of panels of tactile tiles for the outdoor courtyard at their Mental Health Unit. This was a huge project - to produce three strips of huge tiles which all had to be curved to fit the design of the courtyard walls. There were many design changes when the patient safety considerations were revised as my work developed. Project organised by Impact Arts. Each tile is 35cm wide & 35cm high. Press moulded Crank, commercial external paints. Installed Sept 2003.
