Retro Haul
Sometimes you get an offer you just can't refuse.
No, not the mafia, but an e-mail from a friend of mine promising many
free goodies.
You see, my friend is moving house and didn't want to have to put part
of his collection of retro games and consoles into storage and wanted
to know if I wanted any of them.
For free.
After sending back a "yes please" message I settled back to wait to see
what he was going to bring.
I was surprised, to say the least.
So I am now the proud owner of:
1 x Megadrive
I
1 x Megadrive II
1 x Mastersystem converter
2 x Mega CD II
1 x Sega 32X
1 x Amiga 600
1 x Amiga CD 32
1 x Philips CDI + VCD cartridge
1 x Psion Rivo +
1 x Philips Nino 300 (a handheld tablet based thingy)
1 x Super Gameboy
1 x Nintendo Game Genie
3 bags of Megadrive games
1 bag of Snes games
1 bag of Sega CD games
1 bag of 32x games
A dozen CD 32 games
1 bag of CDI games
1 bag of various Amiga stuff (including a second floppy drive)
What can I say apart from:
WHOOOO!
So I've been spending a couple of happy days sorting through the games
and trying out some that I had never even heard of. There are
some real gems in there, as well as some stinkers.
Amongst the gems is a game for the Sega CD called "Keio's Flying
Squadron" which I must admit that I'd never heard of. It's a
side-scrolling shoot-em-up along the lines of the Parodius games.
The game I've played the most on the Sega CD is "Road
Avenger".
It is almost a stretch calling this a game. It is
more a
semi-interactive cartoon. Essentially directions appear on
screen. Hit the right direction or control button and the
cartoon
continues. Hit the wrong one and you loose a life (and get a
different bit of animation, usually of your car exploding or crashing
into something).
Some of the CDI games are worth comment on too - such as the three CDI
Zelda games and Hotel Mario. As far as I know these are the
only
games using Nintendo characters which have ever been licensed out to
another company (in this case Philips). It's a shame that the
first two Zelda games are (according to popular belief) pretty lousy.
The third game is (by all accounts) better. I have
had a go
on Hotel Mario and was pleasantly surprised, it's actually pretty good.
The 32X haul I'll be having a go on once I can track down a video cable
for it. It's a shame that I've not been able to have a go on
it
yet, as the 32X was one of my favourite consoles back in the day.
Yes, I bought one brand new when they first came out.
The
32X release of Virtua Racing is the best home version you can get.
Virtua
Fighter is surprisingly good too, in fact I preferred it to the Saturn
version. Hopefully I'll be able to see if they are as good as
I
remember soon.
I'm saving the Amiga CD32 for last, as I've never used one of them
before (ok, so I've had a quick play of this one, just to make sure
that it works, but nothing in-depth).
Once I've had the chance to play some more of these I'll put on some
reviews of the best (and worst) of the haul.
Sometimes thank-you just doesn't seem good enough does it?
