Rant:
22 / 11 / 06
Hosting Change
I'll be moving most of the
content of this site to a new host sometime next week (I'm just waiting
for the new DNS to propagate before moving things over).
Why move? Well, the host I get from my service provider, nice as
it is
doesn't allow me to use simple things like server side includes, which
are essential once a site gets beyond a couple of pages.
So what will this mean for me?
- A
more manageable site
- The
http://dans-remakes.sytes.net redirect will become just that, a
redirect (so no nasty frames or ads at the bottom of every page).
- The
potential to make a database-driven version of the site
And what should it mean for you?
I'll move the site over this week and once things are working on the
new site the dans-remakes.sytes.net URL will direct you to the new and
improved site.
That's the good thing about using a re-direct - when you move your site
no-one should need to change their bookmarks (if you have bookmarked me
that is!).
I'll update this rant later on as things progress - but for now, we are
at. . . . .
Day 1
Step 1: Registering a new domain name and
signing up with a host.
After a bit of a search I settled on http://www.freevirtualservers.com/ as
a host which appears to offer a decent set of packages (plus it's
UK based which
is a big advantage for me).
The signup is fairly painless, they offer Linux based hosting (with a
web-based control panel), PHP, CGI, MySQL and plenty of other extras
too.
I'm not going to comment on customer support, as I haven't needed to
use it yet.
The "free" bit in the hosting isn't quite as free as it may be.
If you already own a domain name you can transfer it to them to
get your free account, otherwise it is up to you to buy one from them.
Luckily prices start pretty low for a 1 year .info domain name.
The amount of bandwidth per month isn't huge for the free account
(100meg per month) and 100meg storage - but for the price I suppose.
On the other hand their paid-for hosting options do look pretty cheap
(from £15 a year plus setup fee) so if things go well then there
are options.
Yeah, I know. This looks like one big advert for
freevirtualservers. How well their service works remains to be
seen - but at the moment this looks like a reasonable option.
So while I'm waiting for my sparkly new DNS name I'll start looking at.
. . . .
Step 2: Migrating the site to the new
server
This could be interesting as the 100meg monthly limit (yeah - I chose
the cheapskate option) might be an issue so I'll be hosting the images
and downloads on another server, leaving this one just for the HTML /
PHP code.
The DNS entry is now ready (after around eight hours) so I've moved the
index page over, renamed it to index.php, and moved the static page
furniture into a set of includes. The page displays just as it
always did (which is good) so this looks promising as far as the
remainder of the pages go.
Day 2
Don't expect too much today as I spent the night awake with severe
stomach cramps (thanks to this lovely virus that's doing the rounds).
I don't feel as bad now so I'm off to try and get some sleep.
To be continued. . . . .
