Crossword Kit – Instructions





Standard crossword kit

This is a spreadsheet for generating crosswords for use as language teaching materials.

Click here or open the file XwordKitEngC.xls if you have downloaded it already (to download the file in Internet Explorer, right-click the link and select "Save Target As"; please note you need Excel installed in either case).


1. All the cells you can type in are green. Enter the words in the grid on the first sheet, one letter per cell, e.g.

2. Enter the clues in the green spaces next to the relevant words on the second sheet (click the "Clues" tab); you can optionally enter a title for the crossword, e.g.

Entering "Y" in the box marked "p4 shows answers" will display the completed crossword on the Printout sheet – this can be used to print the solution.

3. Print the third sheet ("Printout" tab)



Communicative crossword kit

This is a spreadsheet for generating communicative crosswords for use as language teaching materials - each student in a pair has half the words and makes up clues for the other.

Click here or open the file HalfXwdKitEngC.xls if you have downloaded it (to download the file in Internet Explorer, right-click the link and select “Save Target As”; please note you need Excel installed in either case).

Enter the words as explained above and then print out the third sheet (click the "Output" tab and then select "Print" from the "File" menu) once for each pair of students. Cut each page into two crosswords.
