David Woodhouse was born near Coventry. His vocal training began in earnest as a choral scholar then as a senior choral scholar in Coventry Cathedral Choir under David Lepine and Robert Weddle. He was educated at King Henry VIII School, Coventry and York University where he took a degree in music. During his time at York he was a member of the university’s Chamber Choir which performed a wide variety of music from the 15th century onwards and undertook solo roles in operatic productions of works by Monteverdi and Weill.
Following his degree David took a teachers’ training course at Birmingham Polytechnic. After teaching for two years in Birmingham (during which time his school choir appeared on Radio 4,) he moved to Iceland where he became head of the local music school, and organist and choirmaster of the local church choir, making an appearance on Icelandic National Radio. He also instigated and conducted a joint choirs’ concert, with choirs coming from the surrounding area.
In 1986 David returned to England, to take up a music teaching post at Nottingham High School. Here he conducted the school’s Chamber Choir which won prizes at various local music festivals and sang Evensong at a variety of churches and cathedrals. The choir also took part in the music department’s tour of Venice, the high point being their singing during Mass at St Marks’ Basilica! David relinquished his post in the summer of 2002 and moved to Trent College in order to devote more time to individual teaching and other interests.
David was for two years conductor of the Ravenshead Choral Society, (1991-3) and from January 1998-2008 he was accompanist of the Ruddington & District Choral Society. During this time he regularly appeared as soloist, but from January 2008 he took over as Musical Director. He is currently also accompanist for the Nottingham Hopsitals' Choir . He has appeared as soloist with a variety of choirs and choral societies, covering a wide range of repertoire and has adjudicated at a number of local music festivals. He sings occasionally with the Southwell Minster Choir and he also helps to lead the worship at St Mary’s Church, Eastwood.
