FA Cup Winners 1947

During the late 30's Charlton Athletic were the most feared football team in England. Finishing runners up for the title in 1937, fourth in 1938 and third 1939, they were the most successful English side of the era.

Alas for Charlton the war intervened and what perhaps would have been an even more golden age was lost. Although Charlton were still winners and finalists in the War Cup, this was poor substitute for the lost years of opportunity of major competition.

After the war the aging Charlton squad were still a force to be reckoned with. Short of the fitness of younger sides for a lengthy league campaign, they were still able to rally in the cup. In 1946 Charlton made it through to the FA Cup final, only to be beaten by Derby. A year later the squad rallied again and this time achieved a victory that is still Charlton's greatest success on a football field to this day.

Don Welsh Introduces the Charlton Cup Final Team, was a souvenir book published and paid for by the Charlton Football squad themselves. It was given to me as a young child by a friend of my father, who on hearing I collected Charlton programs, gave me his childhood collection. My collection has long since been passed on to another in similar manner, however, I retained possession of this small book. I have set up this web page to share this little gem that has so long remained hidden, with all Addicks out there..
