Kayaking & Canoeing
all levels - for all the family
The Arun Canoe Club was officially formed on 20th May 1987 following a meeting at the Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre (LSSC) the previous month which set up a steering group. Around 34 people attended the April meeting and the events which followed were very well supported.
The first training sessions, held at the centre in early May, were fully subscribed and attended with much enthusiasm by people whose abilities ranged from novice to experienced paddlers with specialist skills.
The first outdoor session was on 20th May when 17 paddlers enjoyed a sunny evening of very pleasant canoeing around the Burpham Loop of the river Arun. The trip, punctuated by a few unplanned swims, finished in good spirits with the now customary visit to the Black Rabbit pub.
23 members joined together at the LSSC for the first meeting and more members were soon to follow. Over the years of the club's existence the membership has grown to nearly one hundred with particular emphasis and encouragement towards younger and family members.
The steering group continued to administer the club's affairs until a committee could be elected at the first AGM. Various events were organised by the group to cover the wide interests of the growing membership.
The inaugural AGM of the Arun canoe club was held on Sunday 4th October 1987 at the LSSC meeting room. The meeting elected officers, adopted a constitution, addressed the steering group's report, discussed fund raising and a winter programme of indoor and outdoor activities.
Pool sessions continued at the LSSC until September 1990 when financial constraints following the general privatisation of swimming pools forced a move to the pool at Lancing College
