Overview

AviaryBase Pro7 is the latest in the AviaryBase series. Others have tried to copy but none has come near the level of features, and ease of use of this the original and best.

All of the original features of the previous version have been retained. Most features have been changed although wherever possible the method of operation has remained the same, so it won’t be unfamiliar to the existing user.

There are some exciting new features for the beginner and experienced breeder. This is a description of some of the features included in the package. Due to the invaluable feedback from existing users. I have managed to improve on what is already the most comprehensive package available to the bird breeder.

Birds are entered on a specifically designed input screen, just like filling in a form but easier. The key field is the Ring Number, there is a default Ring Number set by the user on the startup screen and this default is automatically entered whenever a new record is called for.

Sex is entered automatically depending on your choice of New Entry Cock or New Entry Hen. Date is entered in the same format as the computer setup. The birds description is entered in three drop down list boxes, these list boxes are automatically updated depending on the information you store in them, this facility makes the program suitable for any variety of bird, any colours or mutations or even a mixed collection.

The father and mother’s Ring Number is entered in the appropriate boxes, These are now drop down list boxes so you don’t even have to type these, in fact you only type the remainder of the ring number and the date to complete an entry and the program does the rest including Grand Parents. That’s all there is to entering a bird from scratch.

There are other facilities to assist in speeding up the entry of data. Enter Brother or Sister enables the fast entry of a nest of chicks, the first is entered in the usual way then this facility is selected. All of the common details such as parents and grand parents are entered automatically leaving you to just fill in the colour etc. Insert Lost Entries, is another time saver. Choose this facility from the menu and birds mentioned in parent and grand parent fields which do not have an entry of their own are inserted for you.

The program then displays the new entries one at a time for you to update or change. This saves time and prevents mistakes. If one chick is entered and the parents and grand parents inserted in the appropriate boxes, click Insert Lost Entries, and the program will insert the relevant entries, leaving seven birds in your table. As you can see this can save a great deal of time, and build up a useful database with the minimum of effort.

After entering some of your birds you will then be able to take advantage of the many advanced features included in the package. Pedigree.- There are three, four, five, and six generation pedigrees plus a three generation with a picture, all are available in colour or black and white with all new printing routines. These can include the name and address of the breeder and a price for use as a sales receipt, as well as assisting in the pairing up.

There are also set searches to cover every requirement. Birds with the same Father (Any Sex), Cocks with the Same Father, Hens with the Same Father, Same Mother(Any Sex), Cocks with the Same Mother, Hens with the Same Mother, Same Fathers Father(Any Sex), Cocks with the Same Fathers Father, Hens with the Same Fathers Father, Same Fathers Mother(Any Sex), Cocks with the Same Fathers Mother, Hens with the Same Fathers Mother, Same Mothers Father(Any Sex), Cocks with the Same Mothers Father, Hens with the Same Mothers Father, Same Mothers Mother(Any Sex), Cocks with the Same Mothers Mother, Hens with the Same Mothers Mother Brothers & Sisters, Brothers, Sisters, Aunts & Uncles, Aunts, Uncles, Chicks from a particular bird, Cocks from a particular bird, Hens from a particular bird Cousins(Ant Sex), Cousins(Cocks), Cousins(Hens), Half Cousins(Any Sex), Half Cousins(Cocks), Half Cousins(Hens), Half Nephew & Niece, Half Nephew, Half Niece, Full Nephew & Niece, Full Nephew, Full Niece, and Family.

Family is a feature that deserves a mention, the database is scanned and a list generated which includes all the family relationships in one list with headings informing you of how the birds are related. There are also Search routines to produce All Birds, All Cocks, All Hens, All Birds in Stock, All Cocks in Stock, All Hens in Stock, All Birds Sold, All Cocks Sold, All Hens Sold All Deceased Birds, All Deceased Cocks, All Deceased Hens, and new sort routines to enable you to see your birds in any order you like, you can even change the order after you have done the search.

The most exciting new feature is the inclusion of Inbreeding factor. Most breeders of birds or any other species of animals use the line breeding method. Most breeders try to breed with related birds, but not too closely related as to cause problems. I have incorporated in this latest version of the program, a method of calculating in percentage terms just how close two birds are related. Chose a bird and click a few buttons and a list is produced showing all possible partners and their inbreeding factor for you to make the final decision. Incorporated in this feature is the ability to enter birds into the pairs section directly from the inbreed section. The original method of pairing up is retained for those who have set methods or calculate their own inbreeding factors.

The pairs section has been reorganized but the methods have been for the most part been left unchanged. All the changes and new features have been made without changing the working methods. They have merely been added too so the basics of the program are unchanged. Why change a good thing? All tables can be filtered to include or exclude any birds you wish. All searches are displayed in a table format, the column widths are adjustable and the settings are stored until changed again by the user. The tables can be sent to the default printer using Windows print manager.

There is a print preview to show you exactly what you are going to get on the page. Fonts, styles and sizes can be changed to suit individual requirements. As if this is not enough there is also the most powerful search of all, which allows the user to set the parameters, any combination of any field on the screen, i.e. Select hen from the list box, Type 1/1/05, and 1/1/06 in the two date boxes, click Green from the colour list, and spangle from mutation. This search will produce a list of all Green spangle hens hatched in 2005. Or it could be used for a simple search to find all Blue birds or all birds from a given year or all birds with a given Grand Father. Because the parents and grand parents can be included in the search it is perfectly feasible to search for family relationships of your own specification. Your imaginations is the only limit. Very useful when searching for a particular bird, type in the information you have, look at the list of birds fitting the description, choose the bird you want, double click the ring number and the program will go directly to that bird. This Double click works on any Ring Number, Father, Mother, or grand parent, on any list produced from any search. You can also go to any parent or grand parent record simply by double clicking the appropriate box on the main screen.

Pairs are established in a separate table on the computer, This is done with virtually no typing even the information from your nest box cards is input with a click of the mouse. Statistical analysis can be carried out on the breeding performance of the cock, hen or the whole stud. This will give you numbers and percentages of Full, Clear, Addled, Dead in Shell, Hatched, and Chicks Weaned, displayed in table format with a graph for easy visualization of the results, all birds or even a particular cage (Very Revealing). Again all can be printed.

Nest box cards can also be generated from the pairs screen and can have the pair printed on, or can be blank. Chicks from each pairing are entered on a card on the pairs screen (Just ring number and Date) Click a button and these chicks are entered into the main table, the records are searched and parents and grand parents are entered automatically. This feature effectively reduces the time inputting the years chicks to seconds rather than hours.

The pair number is also entered and displayed in the From Pair box on the main screen, so you can see at a glance what pair number any particular bird is from. Double click this box and the program goes directly to the pairs screen and the correct pairing. Once your database is established it is no longer necessary to enter any birds, this is about as close as you can get to a self maintaining system.

A show record screen is also available and can be used for much more than just show records, Fields are provided for show record medical history general notes as well as boxes for detailed descriptions as per the show standard, all headings and list boxes can be tailored to your individual requirements. An extra table has been added to the show record for storing a record of each show as well as the performance of individual birds, this allows a simple but easily searchable text record to be entered.

A finance section is available to keep a track on all the income and expenditure connected with your hobby. Searches are available for All Transactions, Birds Income, Bird Expenditure, Non Bird Income and Non Bird Expenditure, etc. etc.

The Genetics section will calculate the genetic expectations of any pairing with just a click of the mouse incredible but true. Click on and choose any colour or mutations (Up to four on each bird) click expectations and a full list of all possible colour/mutation combinations will be produced in seconds. This facility covers all colours and mutations including splits and double factors. There are also a set of notes to help the beginner understand the various terms used, and the mutations available. The genetics section has to be seen to be believed. Even breeders with a good understanding of genetics find this feature useful.

If you are a beginner there is no easier way to learn the basics. Colour standards have been added to this latest program. Just choose the variety from a drop down list to display a description of all required features and a picture. Or you can search for varieties fitting a description you can choose from a group of list boxes, and display all varieties fitting your description. Names and addresses can also be stored within the program on a special section with some easy to use searches.

A medical section is now included, this is searchable on ailment, symptom, or treatment. Most of the common bird ailments are covered and the treatments contain some useful tips especially for the beginner, and it can be expanded by the user as more experience is gained.

A tips screen has been added and is displayed on startup, this displays some tips on using the program to its full potential. A few moments spent reading the tips will speed up the learning process as most users do not like reading the manual. I have learned from speaking to users that very few are using the program to more than 50% of it's capability. This new tips feature should go some way to helping users get a lot more from Aviary Base. The usual Windows features such as shortcut keys for those familiar with the keyboard etc. are covered.

A setup program is included to install the program and establish icons, and start menu entries. Backup and restore programs are included to prevent data loss in the event of a machine crash, and of course there is an easy to follow manual on the disk. If you have any queries or require any further information please contact me on the number below, remember if a feature is not mentioned here it does not mean the program is unable to do it. I am always interested in your views and requirements.

Aviary Base Pro7 will run on virtually any PC with Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME,  XP or Vista, with 50Mb of free disk space, and CD drives.
